Not the best coaching job yesterday but I've been thinking about it for a whole, Rick adelman a HOF coach made inflexible decisions in the past that angered many fans. Parsons was playing great and then started playing chippy, not because he is a bad player but because he is a young player. As a coach you can't continually call out a young player and tell them they are doing it wrong because the long lasting effects are more detrimental. A lot of us on here make it easier than it really is. To start off, the rockets woes this season are due to the holes they have not coaching, a couple of games here and there due to coaching? Maybe? But long term dev is more important and what they have in mind. Morey himself has stated this.
The current system the Rockets are running doesn't want anyone to be a ball handler. That is why Gragic and Kyle left last season, Lin and Beverly are used as spot up shooters. However the system doesn't seem to work well for the team because our fluid games happened to be those when our PGs had more freedom directing the offense. Even the Nuggets game announcers noticed it. I guess proving their system is just as important as winning games for the coaches. No wonder our offense always regresses back as soon as they can afford it (after a few wins).
What I don't understand is that, we have the youngest team in the league. Why pair it with an inexperience head coach? Also, our two most prominent players are guards. Do we have any former NBA guards on the coaching staff?
The more I try to figure out Rockets' system, the more I feel it's like sending a troop in the wild without a floor general, or programming each player with a fantasy game code. I am sure it works wonders if every player on the floor is like a Magic Johnson or we play with computers.
This coach doesn't win you championships. Might not even get us to the playoffs. It's his fourth year coaching and he hasn't made the playoffs yet.
I just don't understand his substitution patterns sometimes. He has a knack for taking out players as soon as they get on a roll. It's bewildering, like he has zero pulse on the flow of the game sometimes. It's my opinion that he has absolutely zero clue on what to do with PGs. His usage of Beverly (a very good pickup), TD (has grown on me, excellent backup PG IMO), and Lin screams of a guy who has no idea what perimeter players do. I just don't get it. His constant flip flopping on who is the PF du jour is just plain annoying. Can we give a young guy like 10 starts in a row with 35 minutes a game and see what comes out of it? I'm not even a fan of D-Mo, but he's obviously the only guy on the roster who knows how to make a hook shot and do a drop step. Why the hell is he not getting even a sniff? gahhhhhhhhhh
They have the right pieces for it. And their bigs are very competent offensively. I always thought Parker had more on-ball time than Lin did tho?
during their winning streak, it seemed that Mchale found a working rotation, especially for the guards. he would take out Lin at the 4 or 3 minute mark of the 1st qtr and put in TD. he would then pull Harden at the 9 or 10 min mark of the 2nd qtr and put Lin back in to pair with TD, then bring back Harden for TD somewhere mid-2nd qtr. the same thing for the 2nd half. there was a flow sustained throughout the game triggered by the 3 guards and it showed in the scoreboard as well. then lin has a bad game, they bring up beverly, TD becomes inconsistent, and suddenly he screws up the rotation entirely. Lin gets benched in the 4th qtr, TD gets 8 mins total playing time, Beverly becomes the fave PG then gets benched... I say stick with your main men, there will always be bad games in an 82 game season, the important thing is to establish a rotation and let the players, especially younger ones, get comfortable with their roles so they can perform to their max capabilities without worrying about being yanked arbitrarily.
Does McHale hate Lin? NO. But does McHale trust Lin? Also NO. An interview in oct http://www.thedreamshake.com/2012/10/4/3455482/tds-lurking-at-rockets-camp Kevin McHale: Q: What were you thinking last January about Jeremy and how has that changed since then? I was just happy for Jeremy because we had him in camp and I really liked him I thought he was a great kid, he worked really hard but we were just in the spot where we had Kyle Lowry Goran Dragic and Johnny Flynn all with guaranteed money and four or five days to look at him but I was really impressed with him as a person. I looked at him and told him I didn't know how much of a chance he was gonna get and he looked me and said I appreciate you just tell me where I'm at. So when he had his success and I was happy for him. On linsanity... Being in the league over thirty years I dont know if I have ever seen something like that. being where he was, being let go and being let go by another team. Then being on the bench and not playing to coming in and doing that was unreal. I actually found a way even on the road to go to sports bars and watch him just cause i was interested. And what about now? Look, as in all things in life, there's a happy medium. He's a lot better than the guy that got let go twice but I'm not sure he's at that level for 82 games, it was a phenomenal level but he's playing well. We're going to rely on him a lot to run our offense make plays and make shots and just be effective for us. He's gonna have a lot of responsibility. If Douglas or Beverly plays well enough McHale doesn't hesitate to leave Lin on the bench. McHale doesn't really like Douglas. In some games he left Douglas on the bench and didn't play him. He started Beverly over Douglas. It's not hate against Lin or Love for Douglas (Beverly). It's just the missing trust in Lin (but also Asik & Patterson).
The Rockets ran a very PG-friendly offense last year and Dragic left because the Rockets wouldn't give him a player option. Lowry didn't leave, he got traded. Try again.
look I'm not saying what they said was true, but last year we ran PnR all day long, this year we haven't been running PnR nearly as much. Maybe its a change of philosophy based on the personnels we have, but that's something worth noting. Just saying
mchale needs to go after this season. he is just not a good head coach. just ask basketball fans in minnesota. they'll tell you.
