Stan Van Gundy asked him if they have a metrics to rate coaches to which Morey replied that although they look at certain things like how players are performing under different coaches, he finds it hard to disassemble the players from the coaches, which is why he doesn't pay a whole lot attention to coaches metrics. They talked a bit about Asik, like how they came up with the idea to five Asik that back-loaded deal, how important it is to have a good defensive big and how Asik is the most ego-less player Morey has ever been around. Morey then went on talking about how public defensive metrics are rather useless (which SVG agreed with) and though Morey -- to keep Les happy -- likes to pretend that their private metrics tell them a better story, they still don't think they have anything great to work with. Morey was asked to name the most underrated player, which he couldn't answer for tampering reasons, leading him and SVG to joke a bit around about Stern. Pretty sure they talked about a few other things, that I sadly can't remember. I guess they weren't that interesting. Podcast of the Dan LeBatard show today. Morey is introduced starting at the 1:06:40 mark: http://traffic.libsyn.com/lebatard/Lebatard-1-30-13.mp3 They were talking about the "Dork Elvis" nickname and Stan Van Gundy joked: "Daryl, I would never use that (Dork Elvis) nickname. To me, you're just a guy who fired my brother."
Also, Chuck Klosterman (who wrote the Royce White piece for Grantland) was on the show to talk about Royce... I'm listening to that now.
Asik is pretty cool, but I've never seen him participate in team celebrations and I'm not too sure about egoless, I think it's too much of a coincedence that whenever he's facing a top centre like Dwight or Brook that he takes some inopportune post-ups against them. Or that he coincidentally played like a total monster against Chicago.
The team celebration thing I think might be a communication/culture thing, he might be awkward or just nervous? I mean, he pretty much escapes from the lockerroom and avoids interviews unless it's such a huge game that he couldn't escape. As for ego, I think there's a difference between personal ego and professional/competitive ego, and I'd be surprised if Asik isn't proud of his professional skills, and tries to see how it matches up against other professionals.
apparently you havn't been around sports very much. you should know what he means by ego; ego is kobe, that i'm the best at everything attitude. asik is just a nice guy who behaves in a modest manner
Great defensive player. Great rebounder. Not a great scorer. He's probably worth the $8.5 he makes annually, but next to an offensively challenged Asik, I don't know if he's the right fit for us. He works well in Chicago because he compliments Boozer perfectly. I suppose you could argue that we score enough to make it work. He's certainly not the franchise piece we've been looking for, but he'd improve our defense dramatically.
Klosterman hit the nail on the head on Royce: "he seems like a 9th or 10th grader who just read a book on mental illness and Marx and now he can't stop talking about it."
What??? Public defensive metrics are useless?? I am sure LOF's are calling him racist and such on twitter.
Well, this explains why McHale is our coach. I like Morey but it's absurd how he doesn't believe in coaching metrics if he's such a strong believer in player metrics. Even if he doesn't utilize coaching metrics, at least use the eye test. I still can't believe we went from HoF coaches like Rudy, JVG, and Adelman to McHale.
