Robert Parish: Bird, McHale won't return my phone calls

Parish is basically saying "I will never say that these guys are mother****ers (but they are mother****ers)."

 

Not a shock that he doesn't have many friends in the NBA "fraternity". He got the name "Chief" because of his stoic, non-expressive demeanor, right? Doesn't seem like the socializing type.

 

Mchale gets jobs handed to him. Parish just perishes.

 

Glad McHale showed some remorse, this just shows you what type of people those Celtics really were. Olajuwon touched on it briefly in his book, but I always sensed most Celtic players, especially Ainge & Bird, were not very nice in real life.

 

Sad to think that the NBA, whether it be NBA HQ or team front offices cant/wont find the longest tenured NBA player a job. At least bring him in for some kind of interview.

 

To be honest ... the NBA is a place where you need to love what you do, and breathe it day and night.

Parish only wanted to coach after he's run out of money. He's been away from the game all this time.

Would you hire him? Would you even interview him? Does he have the passion? How do you explain to management about someone who's only looking for a job when he's run out of money after leaving the 'game' for 20 years.

You're not looking to hire an intern. And you can't hire a hall of famer like him for $100k per year.

Couldn't agree more. Dennis Johnson loved coaching and even coached the Austin NBDL team. I remember seeing him the year before he passed away when I was playing some pickup hoop at Clay Madsen in round rock.

Dude's a few years away from SS, he needs to relax and learn the joys of Ramen. If he needs a new phone or some stamps he should email the Prez, cause 'Murica helps the poors.

 

Sad story and I wonder if he's tried colleges? The most important lesson to take from this though is to manage your money well. There are too many stories of all star pro-athletes going broke a few years after they retire.

He did get a job. He's just whining because he wants more money. As someone with no coaching experience and no connections, you have to start somewhere. Turns out he felt like he was too good for it.

 

If Parish is so dead set on coaching, he should be willing to start from the bottom. They ought to hire him to work with the Vipers. It'd be great to have a big man of his quality to work with our young bigs when they're assigned to the Vipers. Guys like Ohlbrecht would really benefit from it too, I'm sure.

If he can contribute there, perhaps they can find a place for him on our bench.

 

If I remember correctly didn't Bird and McHale help him financially many years ago? This guy can't live financially stable, has no desire for the game and now wants to coach to make some quick cash.

 

Given how long he played, doesn't Parish at least get an NBA pension every year? Doubt that he is that hard up on $ since he turned down an $80K community relations job from BOS on the basis that it paid too little.

Probably can't maintain his former lifestyle but doubt he is homeless or anything like it.

 

He sold is Championship ring too if I remember correctly. 1981 ring I think.

 

That he understood competitiveness but that the Celtics in particular were always cold and wouldn't shake hands, nod or even show some form of respect. That to him was over the top and to me that is evident of guys like Ainge & Bird and now Garnett & Rondo.
