The sad thing about this is that it's common here in Chicago. Every night, and every weekend you hear murders (usually gang-related) sometimes in the double digits, but it never really seems to get much attention because it's so common now. It's sad.

Chicago and Illinois have some of the strictest laws when it comes to carrying. But that's not going to stop any gang members.

I feel for the residents of Chicago. I moved out of the Bricktown suburb a few years ago. Our local gym was on the border of gang territory. It wasn't uncommon to see different crews working out at the same time. Pretty scary considering I didn't have a firearm and knew these fools did. For a city with really strict gun controls.. it's not that its just not working.. it actually looks like it made the problem worse. I don't think gun free zones gives lunatics/crazies a sense of empowerment.. but I'll be damned if it doesn't give everyday criminals one. Criminals know people aren't armed so they are all fair game... vs the alternative.. in which a criminal doesn't know who's armed. Instead of a sure score, he's playing russian roulette. That right there is a enough to make a few criminals think twice when his lifes involved.

 

I don't think this is true. Rather, I think no one wants to shine a bright light on the rest of what you said. In light of strict gun control laws criminals/murderers are thriving in the city. How can something be so commonplace in a location with strict laws to prevent it?

 

Tragedy...its pretty bad in Chi town right now...thugs roaming the streets...

I know that by endorsing this I am encouraging a 1984 like society.. but why can't we treat Gang members like terrorists? Once a war is over, there are plenty of soldiers that have to get a regular jobs and this way they can be a soldier terminating gang members. Even, the national guard could handle these wreckless violent gun users.

I'm just tired of the excuse that the city is undermanned. I can't even visit my favorite aunt, who lives in the nice part of westview without having to hear eses blasting away two blocks away. Yet, during the day time, police officers have no problem issuing tickets for not signaling right of turn. =/

ok my post probably gets this thread to the D&D. I just think it's awful that we let gangs take control of the streets. And now these gangs purposely attack civilians. I wouldn't have a problem if they just targeted each other.

I meant nationally. For the amount of deaths I see every weekend in the paper, it's pretty crazy how little attention this gets. It seems like just another day with more murders, that's the type of attitude the media here treats it as nowadays. And then there's a big update each month about the entire month.

Chicago's is a murder ****-hole thanks to a century of institutionalized racial antipathy. See Cabrini-Green which effectively 'warehoused' the black population. Many of the Northern cities have had the same problem since the so called 'great migration'. Detroit is the most glaring example. The city committed suicide rather than nurture the black population. For all the actual racists and stereotypes of racism in the South, it is the old industrial North that has all the cities with really horrible race problems.

I get that people have different views on gun control, and I'm not going to beat that dead horse here. I don't want to marginalize people who believe in it. But I do want to say that it is often used on the left the same way that "getting tough on criminals" (with things like tougher sentencing) is used by the right - as a perceived simple panacea for solving what would actually require an effort on par with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars over decades to fix.
