I was wondering if anyone who is a knowledgeable NBADL fan can explain the various intricacies regarding trades in the D-League.

For instance, I have seen various references to A-level, B-level and C-level veterans and am not sure what the distinctions are and what criteria are used to make such determinations.

Also, the following trade that the Vipers made last Friday confuses the heck out of me:

The RGV Vipers have traded Reno’s original 2nd round pick in the 2013 NBA D-League draft (acquired by RGV on 12/18/12) to Reno in exchange for the Bighorns’ original 1st round pick in the 2013 NBA D-League draft.

Huh? In exchange for getting their own 2nd round pick back from RGV, Reno traded their 1st round pick??? There's GOT to be something else to that deal that I'm missing. Was this an adjustment to prior compensation based on the outcome of a previous trade?

For those who care (and if you're visiting this forum, you probably should), here is a link to the list of all NBADL Transactions: http://www.nba.com/dleague/dleague/transactions.html

Any help from someone "in-the-know" on these things would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Interesting trade, indeed. Maybe a typo?

I asked somebody who would know ("a person with direct knowledge of the situation" ;)) re: A-, B- and C-level and was told that it's about the pay (different $ amounts).

(I probably could tell you who I asked, since this should be public knowledge, but it surely wouldn't sound as cool!)

The Vipers acquired both Whiteside and Goudelock via trade earlier this month.

Wish I could help you, Bima... I'm clueless as to why. If I see anyone who would know at tomorrow's game, I'll ask them.

Got the answer as to how RGV was able to make this move.

It was not salary-related (which is what I thought it would be), but there was more to the deal -- the Vipers maximized league player acquisition processes to acquire the upgraded pick. It wasn't just a second round pick for a first rounder.
