Stopping crazy people from accessing heavy weaponry doesn't sound like a crazy idea, regardless of how they got crazy in the first place.

There are multiple laws in place designed to stop crazy people from accessing weapons.

FWIW an AR weighs around 7-9lbs and shoots a bullet the same caliber as the .22 that your dad used to shoot squirels. This kid could have done the same thing with that same .22.

Yes, but those laws need to be stregthened because they have been poorly enforced and the system is spotty. The background check system is filled with holes, and needs proper oversight---which is the bulk of these executive orders.

And if an AR is the same as the .22, why are you complaining? You'll be able to defend your house just as well with a .22.

(and in any case, I speak of restrictions for those mentally ill, and not the rest of the population).

I have no problems with more closing holes in the background check system. I have a problem with vilifying a particular looking weapon to create legislation that will serve no purpose, save no people and prevent no crimes.

As far as you comment about protecting my home, this kid wasn't protecting his home he was shooting innocent small children at close range. I don't think he needed anything special in terms of weaponry.

It is interesting to me how passionate people are on this topic yet the impact & stakes seem so trivial. So many people with a vested interest in an outcome to prevent an issue that has resulted in 40 deaths annually on a 4 year running average.

Nice chart but seems hardly worth the spectacle.

Ban these military weapons yea sure, fine but the political drama around the whole issue is so overblown. Guess it takes white people here at home gettin gunned down & scared for it to come to the forefront. No worries about the inner city gang issues or the innocent arabs overseas who are victims of corporate militarism & the drug war since...well, a hell of a lot longer than 30 years.

    Peace gents.

Now Biden is back tracking a bit amid the latest news from the above link stating he is not so concerned about an assault ban on manufactures rather the magazine capacity issue. Thankfully he isn't as repulsive as Feinstein or Schumer I guess...

Glad to see it is not a 100% party line from the senate. Hopefully we get back to 2010 year lows from now on as well.

That Bushmaster AR15 shoots a .223 which sure as hell is not the same as a .22.

From a velocity standpoint, yes the .223 is more powerful. Caliber wise, which refers to the diameter of the bullet, they're the same, with a difference of .001 of an inch. In fact, an AR, with slight modification, can fire standard .22LR cartridges. It's rather common, as .22 bullets are a lot cheaper than .223.
