Seriously. He could be a pioneer in developing plans for people with mental health disabilities in professional sports, but his attitude in his tweets and videos really makes him seem like he's a victim of a cruel world and is blowing out of proportion....ruining his potential of being the pioneer or hero....bur I guess well find out eventually.
The Rockets are actually pretty limited by the CBA and the league in what they can do to accomodate him. I mean, players can be fined for being late to practice and he's trying to arrange a situation where he can basically choose to practice. If he files suit it'll be against the league and he'll probably lose.
I betcha I could go to a doctor today, describe my life, get myself diagnosed as depressive, and get myself onto some meds for years and years. That's what's happened to Royce White. Or I could not go to the doctor and continue to be a "regular guy." If doctors made a living out of saying "You don't need a doctor," there wouldn't be so many doctors around. This guy is making a religion of the medical industry, the doctors are getting paid, but it's not sure Royce White is going to get paid. He's in the doctors' world instead of the basketball world. Look who's profiting and who's not. If he wants to be a patient instead of a bball player, he very well might get his wish.
He's an inspiration to all human beings everywhere. To be able to fly on a plane despite his illness and to talk in front of millions of people is truly an act of tremendous courage. It's all about safety and health, and being human instead of a commodity.
i truly hope you are being sarcastic. it's not all about that. it's all about royce wanting to be a celebrity instead of a basketball player. He has absolutely no business flying across the country to talk to Dr. Phil when he's supposed to be getting ready to rejoin the team and start his career. He should be focusing on getting healthy, not self-serving PR. Are you freaking kidding me? There is no way that's defensible. What planet are you on?

Wilbon and Kornheiser asked very good, direct questions. I particularly liked the question about how the Rockets, knowing his issues, took the chance on him, so does he feel bad about what he has done to them? (He absolutely should.) Noticed on Draft Night how charismatic and refreshingly open White was in answering questions. I thought for sure he would be a huge fan favorite here in Houston. I don't want to rehash my current view on Royce, but he has so, so, so much work to do without worrying even one minute about things like ADA laws or establishing a protocol in the CBA. I don't have much hope anymore for his NBA career.
He's a lost cause. The best possible solution now is for him to part ways with the team (with Rockets getting back 99% of their money) and for royce to never be heard from again. In the meantime, someone tweet him the statistic comparing fatalities from auto accidents vs airplanes.
It is just the impression I get from his words...like he's gearing up for some kind of civil rights fight.
This^^^ I have many complaints about Royce, but people are seeing what they want to see, just so they can keep hating him. He deserves some credit for at least coming out from behind twitter. He should have done it a long time ago, but it's an improvement.
Agree. I don't see how he will ever take the proper steps to ever step foot on the floor for a real game. Even if he did/does, there is so much rust, catch-up and distrust from the past year that it would take a true miracle healing of the mind and drive to undo the damage that's been done and I just don't see that happening. He has his contract and even though he's getting fined, he's getting his attention from his "protocol" stance and that IMO brings him more joy than dunking on Lebron. Basketball never has been his love, just his vehicle to feed his other drives. And while that is ok for most because their drive may be fortune and fame so the better they play ball, the more fortune and fame they get, Royce's drive is fueled by him biting the hand that feeds him. 1.5 years to go before we can stop watching this train wreck. It makes me sick but I can't look away.
The thing is though, if you're gonna fight for civil rights you gotta be oppressed first. I mean, what leg does he have to stand on? Getting drafted was a privelege, not a right, and nobody forced White to declare for the draft he did that on his own. Secondly, the NBA/NBDL lifestyle is already something well known, it's not like he can say he never expected to not get PT or get sent down to the Dleague. More importantly, he can't say the NBA or the NBDL is an "unsafe work environment" because it's literally not true, I don't think anybody has died while playing a match in the NBA/NBDL. OTH, the Rockets have a ton of stuff against him. First of all, he signed his contract in bad faith because he gave assurances that flying won't be a problem predraft and then immediately backtracked on it. Secondly, he received wages but didn't attend training camp and refused to go to the dleague. He can't even argue that the Rox destroyed his potential earnings because no NBA team has this magical "safety protocol" he's demanding, if he thinks the Rox is too dangerous to work then every NBA team out there is too dangerous to work in as well. I mean, will the NBA union even support him on this? He's basically the only person demanding safety protocols, no one else wants this crazy stuff he's insisting on. I bet Harden and co. are all pissed with him as well, you think they'd support this dude who hasn't played one NBA minute and yet is demanding that he can skip any practice and get as much PT as he wants so he can #be well? LOL

Yeah, that was sarcasm ... or plagiarism Assuming he reports to the D-league, the real test is when Royce encounters something he doesn't want to do, whether it's getting benched, getting called up and then sent back down to the D-league again, getting yanked during a game, tough practices, back-to-backs, etc.. And we'll have to worry when he's going to get #anxiety. One question I'd like someone to ask Royce is how can he distinguish between an anxiety episode, and real life stress that all of us feel. And in some cases he seems to be able to put up with some things that some others can't - like driving, driving in the fog, getting an earring, getting a tattoo, speaking publicly, tweeting publicly, being on TV, etc.....
Exactly! And I know this is a cop out but he's only 21. I was seriously screwed up when I was 21. I hope it works out for him for his sake and the Rockets. He's definitely intelligent. I keep thinking to those highlights against Kentucky on the Real Sports segment. I really want to see him on the court this season but hopefully he will be ready to contribute in a major way next season.
