this guy doesn't want to be a basketball player. He wants to be a celebrity. The guy is willing to fly to LA just to do a Dr. Phil Interview, but he wants accommodations from the Rockets on travel? How bout he concentrates on improving his basketball skills, getting mentally healthy, and becoming a good teammate? This is the wrong move and pretty much indefensible.

I've seen a couple of old interviews with him but, I don't know why, but he eerily reminded me of TMac in this interview. The way he talked, his mannerisms, the slightly droopy eyes. It was uncanny.

Outside of that, can't comment much about it. It's still all words at this point.

Dr. Phil makes him feel comfortable, and safe, and healthy. He makes Royce feel like a human being, not a commodity.

He later angrily indicated his issue is with the Rockets’ wanting him to see the doctor they selected for him.

“@HoustonRockets Fining me for saying I’m more COMFORTABLE with my own Doc. vs yours is for sure showing “support” to my health. That’s low!”

Playing-time complaint
White began to express his dissatisfaction a week ago, according to the person familiar with talks, initially complaining about a lack of opportunity to earn playing time. He met extensively with general manager Daryl Morey, assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff, and assistant strength and conditioning coach Dave Macha on Nov. 7 and again with Morey on Nov. 8.

White has not played this season and has been on the inactive list for the last five games. Morey told him in those meetings that other players had earned playing time before him. White, however, argued he was not given enough opportunity to demonstrate he could earn a place in the rotation, contending the Rockets were holding his anxiety disorder against him and that he was being treated as a commodity, a position he has repeated in tweets following Tuesday’s reports about his missing practices.

White attended Friday’s morning shootaround and game in Memphis, traveling in a recreational vehicle as part of his agreement with the team to manage the anxiety that comes with his fear of flying. But he did not attend practices on Sunday or Tuesday and skipped Monday’s home game against the Heat.

Morey had planned to discuss sending White to the Rockets’ NBA Development League affiliate along with fellow rookies Scott Machado and Donatas Motiejunas but has not seen him to have that conversation.

Sessions skipped
The Rockets have made arrangements for White to be treated by Dr. Aaron Fink of the Baylor College of Medicine, but White has not attended those sessions, according to the person with knowledge of the situation.

White indicated via Twitter on Wednesday that he has communicated with Fink but was under the impression Fink was merely offering to assist him and not part of any requirement. White said he had expressed his concerns to Fink but that the problem is between himself and the Rockets and is about “support” rather than anxiety.

On Tuesday, White issued a statement indicating his openness about his anxiety disorder led the Rockets to hold his condition against him.

“At this point, the Rockets are aware of my position and the reason for my absence, any other response is inaccurate. This is important to me, it is a health issue. I must advocate for my rights, it is a player-commodity league — the failure to meet my requests for support will end with me being unhealthy and that is not a consequence that I am willing to accept to play any sport.”

Morey has issued only a brief statement that said: “Royce is not available right now. We are committed to his long-term success, and we will continue to support him now and going forward.”

NBA contracts allow for players to be treated by doctors of their choosing if approved by the teams but require that players unable to play or practice because of medical conditions see doctors or therapists assigned by the team.

Here's a review of the show:

1. Intentionally or unintentionally, EVERY place that they filmed during the piece was conducive to somehow pissing off Rockets fans. When they weren't filming sit down bits in Royce's spacious palace of a home, he and Bernard Goldberg were driving around in White's tricked out luxury automobile. (Hell, even when White was shown working out, he was wearing Rockets gear, spawning any number of "repping the team you're ****ting on" tweets.) In short, fans that came in with a preconceived notion of White being a rich, coddled baby felt validated watching the footage of White plodding around his mansion in his bathrobe.

2. Via draft night footage from the website Grantland, we saw conversations between White and his agent that indicated that the Rockets were the only team that was pondering selecting White in the mid to late portion of the first round. For a guy who led his team in all five major categories (points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals) at Iowa State, White had clearly scared enough teams into thinking he's not worth the trouble. In the footage, White's agent said, "If McHale can pull this off, Houston is a question mark at 18. The rest of the room other than McHale says you're too risky, ok?" The Rockets wound up taking White at 16, so clearly Kevin McHale (with a reputation staking voucher from White's college coach and McHale confidant Fred Hoiberg) went to bat for White in the Rockets war room. How's that taste now, Coach? 29 other teams didn't trust Royce White. One team did. And that's the team that White himself says he won't trust.

3. After hearing and seeing White's descriptions of what ails him on a daily basis, I think the average person (I include myself in this group.) has a hard time grasping just what exactly is so anxiety inducing for Royce White that they themselves don't go through on a daily basis. In other words, "Really, Royce? You're stressed out about your job, your future, life in general? You desire some semblance of order? Well, get in line, dickwad."

The piece showed White on draft night unable to sit down and telling a friend he was so nervous that the room made him feel like he was being "eaten by wolves." Honestly, all I could think to myself was "Yeah, that's probably how I'd feel too on draft night. Having your future decided is a stressful deal. If you don't like it, go work at McDonald's."

In short, the piece didn't help people understand general anxiety disorder any better. All it did was put a smiling face and a defiant voice on everything that Rocket fans have been reading about Royce White. If they hated him before viewing the show, they probably hated him more after. Once again, whoever is advising White failed him miserably.
