I think he doesn't trust Morey. he's saying the problem is that McHale doesn't have control, not that he has too much.

That is correct. In that vein Leslie Alexander is his co-worker, but White only mentioned McHale which seems to imply that he thinks McHale is his equal and he doesn't answer to him. In basketball related actions (practice, film study, games, etc.) White does answer to McHale. On the business side, he would defer to Morey.

If you listen to the context, that isn't how he means it at all.

a smart move, it is really pretty simple to understand if they would have just listened to the interview. He was talking about the difference between decisions made in college vs Pros. In particular about driving to games, (he drove to a couple games in college), in college all he had to do was ask his coach, as the coach runs everything. In the pros, at least with the rockets anyway, the coach cant give him permission on those sort of things, Basketball wise, the coach is boss, operations wise, the coach doesnt have the authority in those issues and they fall to the general manager. I am sure Mchale can give input on what he thinks is the best decision, but Morey is the boss on that.

I dont know why so many people are struggling with understanding this. It happens all the time in the real world workplace. People have to defer decisions to upper management all the time.

My interpretation of White's thought on McHale is a bit different from most here. It feels to me that White thought a NBA coach is like a college coach, and basically have free reign over player decisions. Because of his connections to McHale, he thought McHale would have his back and that's that. But instead, he found out that a NBA team is run like a business with organizational structure, in which McHale is simply a cog within the machine. And that he can't just do whatever the hell he wants as long as he has the backing of the coach.

To me, this confirms his entitlement issues. He felt that he could lie to get drafted, and then weasel his way into getting his protocols as long as he says the right things and make it seem like he's the victim. But then he ran into the NBA bureaucracy which includes the commisioner's office, Players association, CBA, Les the owner, Morey the GM. And his old life where anything goes as long as the coach says yes, suddenly disappeared.

I can easily see why this would cause him anxiety. I just didn't realize that he doesn't really want to overcome his anxiety like an injured player wants to rehab and become healthy.

Any time this guy disagrees with a benching, or whatever, he's going to freak out and leave again. He's a total flake.

I don't think White would allow McHale to have more control anyways. It would go against his own point these past few months that none of the basketball personnel should have the final say regarding his medical condition.

At the college level, though, I guess he was cool with his coach, Hoiberg, to be making those decisions with him.

Maybe it's a personal thing that he doesn't trust the Rockets yet. Or maybe he feels the need to use this job to push the agenda of mental illness. Or maybe a mix of both.

Did you hear the whole interview?

Y'all are reading wayyy too much into his co worker comment. Royce was just trying to explain what the problem is here. He's absolutely right in what he said.

The manager at Wal-mart can't change uniforms because employees complain, even if he wants to. Can he change their break time? Sure.

The manager at McDonald's can't change ingredients because an employee wants healthier options. Can he rotate their positions? Sure.

McHale can't go around signing off on royce's requests. First, because some aren't part of the CBA and second because he doesn't have that authority.

He over simplified it to make a point, that's all. The only difference is Morey will value Mchale's input more than a player's, but the control is still Morey's and Les'. It's not a trust issue with McHale. Royce just knows it's almost pointless to deal with McHale, because he won't have control, until a protocol is in place and Royce is actually with the team.

In other words, Royce is saying there's much more red tape at this level than in college. It's not about Hoiberg vs Mchale or royce vs Morey, it's Royce vs the NBA's rules and CBA.

I could see how the bolded part could be true, not sure how about lying though. I think it's just part of his mental issues and immaturity.

Ding ding ding, pot roast too cold, that's an axiety attack, 8 days off removed from team activities.... only solution is to teach him the ways of the world by withholding pay when he acts up like he is now... he will either straighten up and be a man or end his contract with out ever receiving a dime towards it... it doesnh't affect the team negativley either way, the draft pick is gone, the rest is up to him... whether he faces his fears or contniues with this petulance, it's on him.

I understand your point and that's what Royce probably meant. But any basketball player who refers to his coach as a co-worker is an idiot.

You can criticize him for using poor choice of words, but he definitely didn't mean to intentionally insult McHale.

I thought everyone felt that he was a well-articulating person. Picking the right words shouldn't be his problem.
