Same thing that happens when I leave steak out a little too long in the summer, then a long decay. There probably isn't enough of our great grandparents left to spread on toast.

This. It's what I think about when I've been suicidal before. I don't remember feeling any sort of pain before I was born. I don't reckon it'd be any different.

    I'll be dead.

I'll probably receive some level of a medical exam, then be moved somewhere, and then either put in a box or in an incenerator.

No Heaven/Hell supporters in here? We know little about either, but the Bible and orthodox forms of Christianity teach about both. Most of the information is not definitive, but Jesus said that His followers will be where He is. Good enough for me.

I will go to Heaven, which will include a BBall court where I will be able to consistently dunk a basketball instead of occasionally dunking a tennis ball. (This assumes I will be 23 in body for eternity.)

ahmmm.... the concept of heaven and hell predates Christianity by at least 600 years.

As Carl Sagan noted, we are all made of star stuff. We are a way for matter to know itself. I believe that when we die, we decay and return our elements back into nature to be used again. In other words, we become worm food.

If there is some sort of life after this one, I believe we are all heading there with as little choice as we had coming into this life. I do not believe in some sort of grand judgement with perks/punishments.

    I'll simply cease to exist.
Living for all eternity is not something that is appealing to me anyway.

I don't know. I'd like to believe something about our consciousness is transferred into something else somehow when we die, some sort of reincarnation, but I don't know.

    Your loved ones grieve.

But from your perspective, nothing. It just ends. You're dead. What are you expecting? Magic?

This. It makes so much sense, but for most I think it's a huge faith issue and the possibility of us returning to our unborn state is too painful to accept. WE HAVE TO LIVE FOREVER!!! WE THINK THEREFORE WE ARE IMMORTAL!!!AMIRITE!?!?! :)

I believe theres a bit more to life and consciousness then just then what we have on this planet. I'm a bit of a wild thinker, open minded. I believe in possibility's of other realms, spirits, vibrations, reincarnation...other worlds, places and life's to live...things to experience see and learn. I believe in a god, or supreme intelligence, may be plural. So many beautiful feelings, i don't see why i would want it to stop here like most. Although its possible, i just don't believe that. Theres just too many spiritual experiences me and my father has had for me to say there isn't such a thing as a spirit, soul and more then meets the eye and science, yet.

I am personally interested in the philosophy of Derek Parfit.

    http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/09/05/110905fa_fact_macfarquhar
    (just for an introduction.)

Individual identity is almost a misnomer is his version of reality, and truly, we are a collective species. The Jesuits say that nothing worth doing can be accomplished in one lifetime (meaning you have to contribute to the long-term, big-picture good of mankind, if possible.)

I'm sure Parfit would go over well with our resident libertarians.

Anyway, if I understand Parfit, when I die, that is just a minor blip. Everyone I've talked with, and all that I've done, will still have little ripples in humanity. Those eventually die out in any measurable sense, but it's all a collective effect anyway.

Some people find Parfit creepy, but I find him kind of liberating. I also kind of like a lot of Jesuit writing on the topic.

    Good thread, bigtexxx.
