No, the first available is not 2015. Atlanta conditionally owns Houston's 1st from 2013 to 2016, and can collect in any of those years, whenever Houston falls out of top 14 protected. And if ATL collects in 2016, then the 2017 would run afoul of the back-to-back rule. Which means the only guaranteed 1st that Houston can trade is 2018, which is beyond 5 yrs.
If that is all it takes, it would make sense to do, if nothing else for as a "rental." Then don't resign him unless he gels amazingly with our lineup and we make a deep playoff run. I still think we should save our cap space for the summer of 2014. That being said, I would assume the teams not under the cap making offers will offer a better package than Houston. Also, it is doubtful Atlanta needs even more cap space for this summer; who are they going to sign with that space? What Atlanta needs is a true center, and I can't see us offering up Asik as a part of a package for Josh.
I don't care right now, I just want Morey to do something. This team is just terrible at this moment and our Power Forwards are continuing to be worthless. Our PFs sucks so bad that we have Delfino and Parsons playing the 4... Patterson is starting and he played like 3 minutes and got pulled out of the game.. That's just how bad he is.
Al Horford is the guy we need to trade for not Josh Smith Atlanta will look at Dwight Howard and Josh Smith in off season as they have money for two max contracts this summer and keeping Horford will be prolly useless. He is a 15 ppg and 10 rpg guy at $12,000,000 flat for the next three years...he is the second coming of Tim Duncan or damn near close to him fundamental wise IMO. Perfect PNR guy cause he can hit the mid range jumper and also bang in the post. I'm sure Ferry will listen to trade offers to give him more cap space in the summer and Horford has stated that he wants to move back to PF to become a 20 and 10 guy Horford trumps Millsap Lin / Harden / Parsons / Horford / Asik
JSmith, Horford, Gortat, Milsap or Jefferson.... I'm fine with any of 'em - but I'm not giving up our 4 cornerstones (asik/harden/lin/parsons)... First team willing to take an assortment of PPat/MMo/TD/Aldrich - I'm good with.... may even give em the choice of ONE of the following Delfino/GSmith/DMo/TJones...
love the idea but have a hard time believing ATL would trade away their best player on the hopes that flakey Dwight will sign with them
Yea... if you asked me a few weeks ago or even a week ago, I would have said no to Josh Smith pretty flatly. I really thought this team had it going and the team would only get better as it goes along. Then we could have waited til the summer as a attractive team and signed whatever free agent or traded to get a star who wanted out. But these few recent games have pushed me to the point where real change seems necessary. Nothing seems to fit. Even a player like Smith would do in a pinch (and this team is in a major pinch). I'm so sick and tired of seeing Morris and PPatt - even if Morris went off today.
Teams can trade future first round picks out to 7 years. You are correct in that the first presently-identifiable year that the Rockets can definitely trade their first round pick is 2018. However, they can trade a "future pick" that could be before then, namely: Houston's own 1st round draft pick in the "First Allowable Draft". The First Allowable draft shall be the draft that occurs two years following the year in which Houston satisfies its obligation to convey a future first round draft pick to the Atlanta Hawks (via Brooklyn). The Rockets can also acquire other teams' picks and then trade them, as they did with picks from Toronto and Dallas (via the Lakers). Another possibility--albeit far more complicated and less likely to particularly entice other GMs--is to offer conditional pick swaps. Perhaps something like this: [Team X] has the right to swap its own 2013 first round pick with Houston's 2013 first round pick, provided that Houston's first round pick is between picks 4-14 (I'm assuming top-3 protection here). If Houston's 2013 first round pick is not between picks 4-14, then [Team X] will have the right to swap its own 2014 first round pick with Houston's 2014 first round pick (top-3 protected) unless Houston owes its 2014 first round pick to Atlanta (via Brooklyn). If Houston's first round pick in 2013 and 2014 is unavailable to be swapped with [Team X's] first round pick, then [REPEAT SAME STEP FOR YEARS 2015, 2016]. If Houston's first round pick in years 2013 through 2017 is unavailable to be swapped with [Team X's] first round pick, then [Team X] will have the right to swap its own 2017 first round pick with Houston's 2017 first round pick (top-3 protected). [REPEAT SAME STEP FOR 2018.] If Houston has not made its first round pick available to be swapped in any year from 2013 through 2018, then [Team X] will receive Houston's 2018 second round pick and Houston's 2019 second round pick. As you can see, this last option (playing on pick SWAPS rather than outright pick conveyances) is highly convoluted and would likely require the other GM to tie up his team's own future first round picks. Again, not a palatable option. Still, just showing you other possibilities for trading future Houston first round picks.
It doesn't matter what players the Rockets get. If they don't play defense and their offense is one-on-one they will not win. A different coach is needed.
I'm wondering if Smith is brought in, would he be camped out at the 3 point line all game? Actually, any new player we obtain?
Simple Fix This is the way the Rockets should do there trades for the next couple of years. FIRST, DO NOTHING NTIL FREE AGENCY! SECOND, sign Al Jefferson. THIRD trade Asik, PPat or Morris, Aldrich, and maybe 1 more (pick one), and maybe 2 future draft picks for LEMARCUS ALDRIDE ! Imagine! 1 Lin/Beverly 2 Harden/Delfino 3Parsons/ Jones 4 Aldridge/ Morris 5Jefferson/ DMoe Cutch City, we deserve it, even if it over the cap.
