John Ely is a good candidate for a Lucas Harrel-esqe breakout year.

He got called up in 2010 before ever having success in AAA.

Last season in AAA his H/9, K/9, and BB/9 were all the best of his minor league career.

He's all about pitchability, so maybe he has put it together.

A guy I'd really like to get is Cody Ross

    Altuve
    Lowrie
    Ross
    Pena

    Would be somewhat respectable

(Earlier reports today that Nolan was trying to talk Lance into coming to the Rangers.)

    Norris: $3M
    Lowrie: $2M
    Wright: Unknown

Have signed deals to avoid arbitration. I think that basically finalizes our salary for 2013 unless the team makes a change to the 40 man roster. I can't imagine Wright getting more than $1M in arbitration.

Edit: This gives known salaries to any trade ideas. I don't know if it makes it less likely for a deal or not. I know a lot of people expect Lowrie/Norris gone soon.

I wanted to leave you rep, but couldn't. I always thought Texas was a wild card in all this, and that it would take $10M for a non-Astros team, but I didn't think think it would happen.

You and your source (thankfully) more knowledgeable than me with regards to the stupidity of GMs.

why is it stupid? the contract assumes he's healthy. when healthy, he is a huge asset.

    Because it ASSumes.

Fair value if he stays healthy. Terrible value if he struggles to stay healthy like 2 of the last 3 seasons.

parties to contracts don't assume anything, if smart...if smart they judge all risk and that affects other things...like price.

if you believe a guy to be injury prone, you build that in to the price of the deal. unless of course you're a #DrunkenSailor

That is why there are incentives. They could have put incentives in it for PAs and the deal would have been good. They panicked after losing Hamilton.

As bad as Young was last season, that actually may be a break-even proposition for the club if Berkman stays healthy.

They also will have flexibility to make a move at a later date.

I have a hard time seeing Lance being breakeven relative to losing both Young AND Hamilton.

I don't think he would have. That is why you just pass on a deal.
