I'm not going to go out and say that Douglas is on the trading block. If he is though, the whole reason would be because we have a decent replacement. How are we suppose to know if we have a decent replacement if Douglas keeps getting his 18 minutes and Beverly never gets to play?
At no point did Daryl Morey consider re-signing Toney Douglas to an extension. This should have been obvious to all Rockets fans, but it wasn't, for whatever reason. Morey understands that you should NEVER invest heavily in a backup PG, as there are always perfectly solid PGs who can be signed to a one-year, minimum salary contract, or even to a series of ten-day contracts (e.g., Mike James). And there are occasionally dudes like Patrick Beverly, i.e., dirt-cheap, medium-upside dudes who desperately want an opportunity to play in the NBA. Morey clearly views Beverly as good rotation player and wants him in the rotation sooner rather than later. As it turned out, sooner = immediately. I was always baffled that so many Rockets fans seemed to expect Douglas to be a part of this team's future. Bizarre! And yes, if Morey can get something, ANYTHING, for Douglas, even a late second round pick, obviously he makes that trade in a heartbeat. More likely, Douglas' expiring contract gets packaged with a combination of expendable assets (i.e., Patrick Patterson, Cole Aldrich, Marcus Morris, Donatas Motiejunas, maybe Terrence Jones) in a trade for a big frontcourt upgrade (e.g., Marcin Gortat) somehow. And, as I've pointed out in other posts, it is possible that Houston will wind up trading for or ultimately acquiring (this summer) not one but TWO good big guys (e.g., Gortat AND Paul Millsap). Houston has the assets and the cap space (and the front office ingenuity) to pull this off. I believe Morey is likely making this offer for Gortat: Patrick Patterson and Phoenix's choice of either Marcus Morris, Royce White, Terrence Jones, or Donatas Motiejunas to Phoenix; Marcin Gortat and either Sebastian Telfair or Jermaine O'Neal (minimum salary, expiring contract) to Houston Gortat is under contract (and it's an exceedingly reasonable contract, too) for 2013-14, so Houston will still have a large amount of cap space to play around with this summer. Which means they'd be able to add another good player (probably a big man) via either free agency or trade. And the reason why Houston is in this position is because of the excellent, excellent job the front office and its scouting department are doing. They find diamonds in the rough, for cheap, consistently, which means that they don't spend $4-$6 mil/year on role players like most NBA teams do, and which provides them with all sorts of flexibility.
Toney Douglas happened. never liked his game. you know what you got with douglas. a streaky shooting guard trapped in a point guards body. he cant run an offense is a low iq player. id rather play beverly and see what we have in him.
McHale is just having a look at the new kid, nothing to get too concerned about. Douglas probably will get traded, but I believe that's been the plan all along. Multiple trades and moves are on the way, don't get too attached to anyone on this team.
Funny how every single time someone plays for the first time in a while, or doesn't play for the first time in a while it all of a sudden means a trade is coming. I guess DM has gotten us thinking that way.
toney's more of a sg on the offensive end. i assume we are gonna ride patrick beverly until he struggles. my thing is mook and ppat arent getting it done, but i know mchale wont dnp those guys or cut their minutes for dmo or terrence
Even if they plan to trade him, or even if they plan to dump him into the ocean, why not let him spell Harden for a few minutes when it's damn obvious Harden is tired?
Douglas is capable of scoring in bunches. Beverley isn't. It'll be funny when Beverley falls back down to earth and the Rockets are searching for a backup PG who can shoot like Douglas.
Harden, Delfino Lin, Douglas FG% in January Douglas 48.2% Delfino 45.2% Harden 43.6% Lin 41.3% Just when Toney found his rhythm... Played well in December averaging 11.6 points off the bench and 46.6% from 3-point range. Was shooting extremely well from the field in January. I've followed Toney since his days at Florida State and his first 1 1/2 seasons with the Knicks. When he gets on a roll, he's a 6'2" guard capable of getting really hot and shooting well above 50% from the field for a stretch of games. It's a matter of him being healthy + playing time = confidence. McHale replacing him in the rotation has probably destroyed his confidence, so I don't expect to see him play the way he's capable of playing again for the remainder of the season. It really pisses me off what McHale did. It's not like Beverley is helping the Rockets win ball games and the two of them, Douglas and Beverley, can play together in the same backcourt and give the Rockets a spark.
