Apparently it was a gas pistol which is for self defense. It isn't lethal but can cause damage fired at close range.
What are the odds this guy sues everyone who beat the !@#$ out of him? "your honor, all I was trying to do was kill this guy and when I failed, these crazy people almost beat me to death!"
I like the tuck-and-roll maneuver the old guy used after the gun jammed. It was pretty clumsy, but considering the situation, it might have saved his life.

The dude was lucky to get out of there alive. I didn't think less of them because they beat his ass a little first.
On the right is simply a magazine with a "fingergrip" extension on it, which makes it more comfortable in the hand. Not all magazines have those. The picture on the left looks to have a magazine in it, that is flush with the bottom of the grip. If not, the handle would be hollow.
