ND didn't have classes from May 11 until June 18. Plenty of time for hospital visit, I'd think. http://t.co/V9Tqv03b

Need more info still to say anything for sure. Still doesn't explain the motivation for Tuiasosopo AND two other unnamed people to carry this on for as long as they did. I mean you could argue that Tuiasosopo is just crazy or something, but to find two other crazies who were willing to join in and do it for so long is harder to believe. There is also this: Schaap asked why Te'o didn't go to see Kekua in the hospital.

"It never really crossed my mind. I don't know. I was in school," he said.
What? The love of his life is dying and it "never crossed his mind" to visit her in the hospital? Also, ND didn't have classes from May 11 until June 18. Plenty of time for hospital visit, I'd think. http://t.co/V9Tqv03b

While some one could say Te'o must be an Oscar caliber actor to be faking it, what level of actor does that make Tuiasosopo for fooling him for so long with no clear motivation? If it was a joke it would be pretty hard to carry it on for as long as they did without busting out laughing at some point or laughing about it with others outside of the 3 of them directly in on it. Pretty time consuming for 3 people too.

Plenty of people have been fooled by fake identities online, but getting fooled for so long with so many video chat options available is a lot tougher to do. How many canceled meetings and failed video chats does it take to be suspicious? You would certainly think there would be enough prior to the point that he fell in love. But he wasn't even suspicious until she called well after her "death" and told him she was still alive? Even then he wasn't sure? I guess he is one of the most naïve people in the world

People's inability to recognize that this is entirely possible is confusing to me. You get into a very long distance relationship with a top 1% of the genepool woman (i.e. virtually too good to be true), you have other things going on in your life that keep you busy (school and a successful football career)... add in his conservative culture/nature and upbringing, and any other extenuating circumstances (mental health probs, social anxiety, etc.)... and at some point, I'm pretty sure Te'o likely crossed over into the territory of *wanting* to be fooled. He wanted to believe she was real, so he acted accordingly so preserve that fantasy. Exercising a sort of active plausible deniability along with cognitive dissonance. Eventually, to his own detriment, and the detriment of others. This is not a very rare occurrence and it should not blow people's minds as much as it is doing.

Not surprised at what he said. Falls pretty much in line with how I imagined this story was going to play out. He was embarrassed and ashamed about the nature of his relationship, so he lied and embelished things to make himself look like less of a socially awkward weirdo. The lie blew up in his face after she "died" and then "un-died", and so he perpetuated the myth to prevent himself from being outed as the socially awkward weirdo who had an imaginary girlfriend. We've already got some leads out about the hoaxers, it will be very interesting to see who steps forward now and what their motives end up being. Maybe Te'o pissed somebody off at some point, or maybe one of his countrymen was jealous of his success. Who knows.

He previously said he went home to Hawaii for summer break while she was in the hospital after the car accident.

I believe what Te'o is saying. What seems strange to me is someone calling another person his girlfriend when they have never met face to face. I could never consider someone a girlfriend just because I've spoken to them on the phone or communicated through the internet. Friend yes, girlfriend no.

Another thing that just blows my mind are the people who orchestrated and carried out this hoax that lasted several years. Spending hundreds of hours on the phone with someone in order to pull off some hoax? I just don't get what someone gets out of doing something like this. I can understand someone trying to scam someone out of money, but what they did to Te'o just doesn't make sense to me. I've got better things to do than to spend three years playing a joke on someone.

It still doesn't make sense that "it didn't occur to him" to visit his "girlfriend" in hospital 1) after a life-threatening car accident, 2) while she had leukemia.

    Doesn't make sense.

I would think that most flights from Notre Dame to Hawaii could pretty easily be scheduled to stop in California on the way though, so how hard would it be to stop on the way or back if she was the love of your life? It's not even that he didn't manage to schedule it during that specific time frame that is hard to believe, but that it "didn't even cross his mind" to visit her in the hospital when she is dying. I wouldn't be surprised if he was fooled, but it also seems likely that he still isn't telling the whole truth either.

And where did he go when he was 'visiting' her in Hawaii?

Anyone over 35 who was a teen when aol first blew up shold not be surprised at the fake online girlfriend thing. There are people who like to make fake female usernames and get off on having online relationships especially during the aol era

This is like the biggest non-story of all time. It absolutely amazes(and sickens) me that people are actually still talking about it. Are we that desperate for news?

It makes zero sense...and that's why anyone with an ounce of cognitive ability shouldnt take his word at 100%.

I don't know why you're in such a hurry to throw this guy under the bus. There's lots of things here that don't make sense. We will find out what is true and what the motives were soon enough.

I also find the timing quite amusing.

Te'o cancels a couple interviews about the situation...he goes into preparation mode with his attorney...and then it just so happens, that Roniaiah confesses during this exact time. Now, Manti has time to prepare his answers with the thought that it truly was a hoax.

    Yeah, okay.

24 hours ago, I was 99% sure Te'o was lying and played some part in the hoax. Now I'm back to neutral. He seems believable even though not everything makes sense. But we shouldn't expect everything to make sense in this twisted storyline.

So he has already admitted to lying several times. Assuming that he is still lying to some extent means "throwing him under the bus" or "tearing him to shreds"? Oh the drama!

Im not in a hurry...sometimes, when there are a certain number of facts pointing to one direction, it doesnt really matter what the other facts are because a certain level of information has already established some guilt. There is just too much evidence pointing towards Manti literally being a brain dead moron...and the fact of the matter is that I dont think he is as dumb as he is making himself out to be. There are too many things that are fishy.

Donny, I would say that one of your great qualities is that you want to give everyone every chance to prove doubters wrong. You abide by the innocent until proven guilty rule 100%. Thats a great quality. However, on the flip side of it, there are certain times where there is just too much smoke to not call for a fire. Just on this board, you've done it with Schaub, Armstrong, and now Te'o.

When the news of this first came out, I never rushed to judge. But, pretty soon after a decent amount of info came out, I realized that Te'o is on this joke or he got hoaxed but used the story for sympathy...and I also realized that if it is neither of these scenarios, then Te'o is easily one of the dumbest people in our country. However, I just dont think he is that dumb...I dont think its possible for him to be that dumb when Ive seen enough of him to conclude his IQ isnt that low.

Right? It was a funny sidenote when it first broke...strange for sure...but at this point, I just don't care. I think he probably knew something was going on...I have a difficult time believing a man doesn't go visit the love of his life when she's in two life-threatening situations. That falls outside of the plausible for me...he clearly embellished the relationship, and the media lapped it up. Whether he intended for it to create sympathy and a backstory for him for a Heisman bid, it did just that regardless.

But, honestly...who cares at this point? My name is Paul, and that's between ya'll.

The reason this is still a story is two fold. One, we still don't know all the facts. Who was involved and how complicit was Manti and his family. Second, so much of his popularity and fame is based on what a good guy he is. Something that could reveal him to be completely lacking in integrity would undermine his public persona.

America loves a train wreck. Remember how long people were talking about Tiger Woods? Expect the same here.

I have to stop posting for a while. I keep getting instant messages from my fake girlfriend.
