Smith's trade value faces the same issue as that of Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap: that he is an upcoming unrestricted FA likely to make high, but not max, salary.

This means whoever gets him now won't have that much of an advantage in trying to keep him in the summer. If he were an no-doubt-about-it max player like Chris Paul, then ability to offer an extra year and higher raises become important-- anything you pay him is worth it and the extra $30M you can pay him helps in convincing him to stay. For guys not quite at max level, all that the Bird Right does means you are allowed to overpay him at an unwise salary (See Johnson, Joe).

This trade would almost make us a contender instantly. We would probably just need a little bit stronger of a bench to truly contend though.

No to Josh Smith! At first, I was OK with him playing for the Rockets, seeing those highlights from him throughout his NBA career. But I took a closer look at his game from the just concluded ATL-BKN game (1/19/2013). Here's what I observed:

    1. Around 2-9 field goals from third quarter onwards. Most of the shots he took were not his shot. 3 missed 3-point shot (1 missed badly, hit just the backboard). The two made shots were a 15-ft jump shot, and a dunk on Brook Lopez.

    2. Made a good cut to the basket, but couldn't finish even without any defensive player fouling him.

    3. Got only 2 rebounds from third quarter onwards, IIRC. One rebound (defensive), he went all the way for a fastbreak slam posterizing Brook Lopez. But on one offensive play, he was nowhere near the ball to get the rebound and was already in the back court to defend a fast break. However, I think defending the fast break should be the guards' duty. If I'm not mistaken, it was Teague who was fighting for the rebound, and of course, Teague didn't get the rebound, IIRC. With Smith's athleticism, he could easily get more rebounds if he just tried.

    4. On an offensive play, he set a screen, but didn't roll. He just stood there, a foot inside the 3-point line.

Small sample size? Sure. But Smith's mistakes I'm pointing out is not if his game is off, or if fatigue was a factor. It's his decision-making.

To be fair, though, I don't have a crystal ball to see the future. Some players, when traded to another team, fits better (or sometimes worse), hence, plays better. I just hope Morey gets the right player.

You right you right, Smith has never been a good decision maker throughout his career, no legit post game and he can't shoot.

I take a Milsap over him for less price.

Smith may change his mind about the Rockets if he finds out that he can only live outside the perimeter to stretch the floor and can't take midrange shots.

Tonight should be further proof that we need a different type of 4. Smith is more of a 3 if anything.

    From ESPN insider:

We could also end up with either Gortat in a trade with the Suns, or Pekovic in a 3 team deal involving T-wolves & Grizzlies...pure speculation, but In Morey We Trust.

why do we need another center, especially one who is already a starter and might not be willing back up Asik.
Pekovic would be great but we need upgrades at pf and pg before C

Who knows, Morey works in mysterious ways...

Pekovic could be brought in and moved again at or before the deadline. Teams are willing to trade with us due to our cap space & ability to take in more than is going out.

I wouldn't mind Gortat or Smith. Everyone is in love with Milsap, but whilst he's a good player, he isn't ever going to be great.

    Let's just wait & see.

I'm not a fan of Josh Smith. At least not in a rockets uniform. He's undersized at the 4, esp. by western conf. standards, and he doesn't have a jump shot. He's a great athlete with an unrefined game. I think the rockets can do better.

Obviously we need an alley oop guy (Lin and Harden would benefit so much) and Smith is the best dunker of all the available PF so I like this trade as long the hawks don't ask too much in return.

    If we ended up with:

    Jeremy Lin
    James Harden
    Chandler Parsons
    Josh Smith
    Marcin Gortat

I would be one happy duckling lol.

What makes you so sure? It would be a better defensive team with Smith and Gortat.

Asik is way better than Gortat on defense, its not even a comparison.
Smith is a low iq bball player, sure he has all those cool dunk highlights, but wait till he starts jacking up those contested 3's and long 2's
