In my philosophy class today my prof proposed the question... "Is something right because God loves it, or does God love it because it is right?" WhoTF cares?
If the buzzer goes off while a 3 point shot is in the air, and the ball bounces off the ground into the basket, does the basket count?
I took philosophy for a prereq class and an easy A in college. Did not learn nor do I remember anything from that class. The only thing I remember was giggling at the sight of a professor (who was a Pastor) going at it with an Atheist student every single class day. And it seemed like the student won most of the debates.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/L1tsCOkCoC8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I remember my first Taoism book... I loved taking religion and philosophy in college. I remember my first day in religion class and the prof. writes Revelations 22:19 on the board. "And if anyone takes away from the words of this prophetic book, God will take away his share of the tree of life and the holy city, written in this book. " He erases a couple of words and changes them, to mean something completely different. Then he turns around with a look of "deal with it". All the people that were hardcore christian freaked out. (Why would you take "world religion" and get offended, aren't you here to learn about other cultures and comprehend other faiths?) But yeah the hangman shouldn't have done hung em...
BZZZT WRONG The men DID each receive $1 back, this is a fact. The total paid therefore DROPPED from $30 to $27 The ROOM price was $25, but they PAID $27 - the bellhop kept the $2 above the $25 room price to bring the total UP to $27, not DOWN from $30. SO, it is 25 + 2 = 27 ... NOT 30 - 2 = 28 This is the entire reason it is a riddle in the first place, because people want to try to think of it in terms of subtracting the $2 from $30 instead of adding it to the $25. Trust me on this
Start off with $30 $30 - 5 = $25. $25/3 = $8.33 From the $5 refund. Each man gets one dollar. So $2 is added to the bill, or $2/3. Each person paid an additional $0.67, bringing their individual totals $9 a person. They spent $27 and received 3 x $1 in return. Therefore, after the '2 dollar tip', they have spent $9 each instead of $10 each. Nero's math checks out.
A better one from my own philosophical mind, if God is all knowing then it stands to reason he knows the ultimate fate of every person ever "created", and whether their soul goes to Heaven or goes to Hell: why then would a God worthy of worship allow someone to exist who never really had a chance at Heaven to begin with?
Or further, why would he get pissed at us for doing something since he created us this way and knows we were going do it from the moment he created us. And so what I'm saying is, he is actually ultimately responsible for that time I kicked that cat in the ass.
$10+$10+$10 = $30 Each has now paid $25/3, or $8.33, inkeep has $25 and bell hop has $5 in his hand. This is correct. Can't split a penny three ways. inkeep has $25, men have $3, bellhop has $2. Their total is now $28. They will now have Paid $25 and TIPPED $2. Men have $3, inkeep has $25, bellhop has $2 $3+$25+$2, so what the is the problem, again? Ohhh... your math is wrong. EDIT: They paid $27 because they have $3 in their pocket.
Um, no. They paid $27, which includes the bellhop tip of $2 since they should have only paid $25. Out of pocket the men are out $27. The hotel owner has $25 of that. The bellhop has $2 of that.
Yes, that is correct. Cost of the room: $25. Tip $2. That's the end of it. My very last statement is incorrect, which I will now correct. Thank you for pointing that out.
No, this is incorrect. The problem, though, like so many of these 'riddles', lies in an incorrect phrasing of the original question, not in the actual answer itself. The question, *AS POSED IN THIS THREAD*, has already 'flipped' the first coin - in other words, the probability that the first coin flipped is 'a boy' 100% certain. That means necessarily that the answer to the question AS POSED is 1/2, not 2/3. It hinges on the certainty posed in the question. The ONLY remaining variable is the gender of the 'other' child, and, assuming the question is really about flipping a coin and not about all the millions of variables which go into the determination of a child's gender, then we'll just take the simplistic route and call it a 50/50 chance either way. And since the first 'flip' is already a 100% certainty (the first child IS a boy), then the 'odds' of the other child being either gender remains 1/2. Like I said, it is a problem with the phrasing of the question. Several people, having been familiar with this kind of math problem over the years, jump in and answer with the way they learned it, which is to assume that the gender of child #1 is NOT 100% certain, which then does in fact change the 'odds' from 1/2 to 2/3. So what the question is really about is the combination of the two 'flips' in conjunction with each other. But in order for the question to have 2/3 as a valid answer, the gender of the first child cannot be given as 100% certain as part of the question. Additionally, the probabilities change constantly, depending upon what point in the process the 'flipping' is in. Prior to the first coin being flipped, the probabilities are one set of numbers, but the instant one is flipped, the probabilities completely change. This is why it is imperative that the question be phrased as '*IF* the first child is (x), then what are the probabilities..etc etc'.. This leaves in the necessary uncertainty. But saying 'The first child is a boy' removes the uncertainty, which completely alters the probabilities. Which is of course why these things so often get mangled by improper phrasing in the first place.
Because God values free will. Just because He knows what choice they will make does not mean they did not freely make it without interference.
