Did white people hate "The Lion King" because the main characters were Afro-Felines, as opposed to fellow white people? Did white people hate "Homeward Bound" because it starred two dogs and a cat? Did white people hate "Bambi"? "Wall-E"? "A Muppet's Christmas Carol"? Huh. It seems like, according to your logic, that some white people relate to animals, puppets, and robots better than they do Asians (or Blacks or Latinos). You don't seem to think too highly of the empathetic qualities of white people then.
Hollywood used to tell itself that movies for women couldn't sell either. It was more wishful thinking than logical thinking when you consider the fact that women make up more than half the movie-going public. It's a bunch of old frat boy movie execs convincing themselves that the public only wants to watch guys like them (or at least idealized versions of them) blow **** up, beat the baddies, and have sex with lots of hot disposable women. Only now are the "geniuses" in Hollywood realizing that you can make a boatload of money by catering to women. Movies like "Sex and the City" and "Twilight" are utter garbage, but at least they're finally a nod of acknowledgement to the female gender that they exist and deserve to be catered to just as men are. It's the same thing with Asians. This demographic has a ton of untapped consumer power, but the people in power are either afraid or uninterested (probably a combination of both) of giving Asians space on center stage.
You're right. Hollywood is so desperate to find and nurture Asian-American talent. That's why it whitewashes so many of the few roles that are meant for Asians. It's all those damn Asian parents' fault.
You forgot Ken Watanabe who was in Last Samurai and the movir directed by Clint Eastwood. Wasn't he nominated for an Oacar?
Dion Basco? I remember him. His brother is Dante Basco, aka Rufio from Hook and voice of Zuku from Avatar: Last Airbender. Both of them, and Kevjumba, did a indie move that they released on Itunes. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bhABMnRIhmI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Jeremy Lin is inextricably tied with discussions about race and gender, especially with regards to Asian men. Anybody who is shocked, SHOCKED at this idea has been ensconced in soft, pillowy white privilege for way too long.
That has to be one of the dumbest post I have ever read. I like all kinds of movies where the stars are black, white, Asian, Latino even aleins. I like people by what they do not by the color of their skin. I stated that in general people like movies they can identify with. That's what you like whether you want to admit it or not.
Jason Scott Lee and Tamlyn Tomita? That's how desperate you have to get? And before you say that there shouldn't more than a few token Asians anyway since Asian-Americans are only 5% of the American population, acknowledge that if it were truly about demographic #s, then half the movies made in Hollywood would be about women and starring women. After all, women are 50% of the population (a little more, actually), so they should get 50% or so of the starring roles. Just like how Asians should get a miniscule 5%, according to proportional representation.
Whenever a thread turns into a discussion about racism it should be put in DD imo. There's a couple of posters that just feeds on this type of stuff.
Exactly. And the same was also said about black people. The old Hollywood execs didn't think white people would watch black protagonists either. Times have changed but unfortunately some of those old Hollywood people are still in power. Hopefully the next generation will realize this and change things.
You can just stay out of this thread. That's an option. A discussion thread about a Jeremy Lin documentary isn't exactly must-read stuff like a game day thread or anything.
Would be nice to get it moved out of the front of the Game Action and Roster moves section. Most people don't care about how many Asians are in Hollywood movies except a few.
I know you're joking, but you're partly right. Lots of hardline old world Chinese parents pushed their 1st generation children away from their culture because they were too strict. Those children rebelled against their "uncool" parents by completely assimilating into America and dumping their Chinese culture in the trash. Two of my FOB cousins married other Chinese. Four of five of my ABC cousins married whites. The fifth married a Korean. We're whitewashing ourselves. Hollywood is basically run by white men, so all minorities including women usually don't have good roles unless they are "stars" or write, produce and promote their own projects. They're not going to change their ways for us, so we need to do it ourselves.
You suckers forgot 21 jump street. What about Misuka on Dexter? You 2012ers got no culture. I bet you don't even calibrate your Vizio tvs
You lamesanity suckers forgot Sulu from Star trek. The real star trek not deep space nine that you watch.
Yes, of course. Say had a choice to watch one of two movies, movie A or B. Movie A. Is a movie about a white man that grew up in northeast Ohio and played basketball, then moved to Texas when he was twenty just to be a Houston Rocket fan. Movie B. Is a movie about an Asian man that grew up in small village in China and played basketball, then moved Shanghai when he was twenty just to be a Shanghai Shark fan. I would choose movie A to watch and it wouldn't have anything whatsoever to do with having anything against or not liking Asians. It would just be easier for me to identify with movie A so it would hold my interest more. I speaking in general, most white Americans watch all kinds of movies and like them. Just think of all of the awards that Slumdog millionaire won. I understand that you don't like for people to act racist and neither do I but I don't think it's a good idea to attach the racist tag so freely.
I think none of 2012ers know anything about movies, Tv, and basketball. Jeremy lin isn't a victim here. It's the readers of clutchfans. Silence is golden.
