our QB doesn't have to run like Kapernick but should be able to scramble for first down if needed every once in awhile. schaub's lack of mobility killed us many times.
When I went back and read what I typed I kinda came across as a jerk, it wasn't intentional. But yeah assuming we traded for players who made roughly the same as Schaub it would be fine going forward, but for one season we would have a huge cap hit based on his "guaranteed money" And regardless of if we took the cap hit or not, each team has its own unique Rookie Salary Cap, based on the number of draft picks they have and where in each round the picks occurred. For instance, let's say that we were technically over the cap, but we had 12 draft picks, based on the slotted salaries, we would still be able to sign those players in conjunction with the "rookie salary cap"
not much you can do outside of giving schaub some extra weapons, shoring up the defense (ILB especially), hope the the right side of the oline matures and improves (i think it will), draft a qb in the 2nd or 3rd rd, and open up the damn playbook and PRAY TO GOD SCHAUB GROWS A PAIR OF BALLS IN THE OFFSEASON. enough of this damn complacency that runs rampant throughout the organization... rick and kubes should be looking to improve every position at all times. loyalty gets you a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head while berlin is being bombed in 1945.
why is he gone, at the very least, yates has proven to be a reliable backup who wont wet the bed if a team is handed to him. hes proven to be in the top 5 of backups (real backups not guys waiting for the current starter to expire). the only way i see him leaving is if another team picks him up and overpays for him to either tryout as the starter or be their backup..
The team wil have a hard time tanking. I wonder if a possible trade scenario for Kirk Cousins will open up in the future. THis year for sure it won't but maybe in the next 2-3 years.
I can't comment on whether Yates has retained his position as a top 5 backup, because he didn't look nearly as impressive this year though on limited snaps. We do know that Kubiak makes his backup QBs run through all the same stuff that Schaub does, so if that were true, Yates was expected to improve and he had not done that. But in the end it's Kubiak's decision to keep Yates, and listening to him on 610 yesterday, he basically admitted that Yates wouldn't be a piece of the team's future.
Kubiak is good coach, but I think its time for a change. a new head coach, could make schaub better (look at alex smith, he was a bust with 49ers until harbaugh got there, and then he was really good, and he would still be the starting QB, if he didnt got hurt.) also wade phillips is a great coach, I wouldnt fire him, but he needs to prepare his player better when they are playing against a great QB.
