(ubigred isnt in it for the objectivity or credibility, just typical sourpuss pot-stirring contrarian. Would disregard.) Schaub extension wasnt a great thing for the team, but doesnt look like its going anywhere. (Hopefully there could be a team that thinks its a "solid QB away" from advancing and willing to give up a moderately high draft pick for Schaub. But with the ndy Dalton, Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick types doing well, teams might take a risk on drafting a successor instead of trading for a pricey Matt Flynn dude. Maybe something the TEXANS themselves should consider. All things considered, this was really Schaub's first healthy opportunity in the postseason "where it counts". It sucks to say, but its finally happened where Schaub was even IN position to get blame, he "lucked out" with some previous season ended injuries to give him an "incomplete" It RARELY happens with coaches who tend set in routines, until they do the "copycat league" thing, but a possible change in philosophy or wrinkles to the approach with the same players might be the only bet. Though you're looking at another learning curve and built in excuse of "this was their first year under a new philosophy, give it time" stuff.... Basically saying, what if Kubiak and coaches actually learn from their mistakes and adapt the way fans actually want them to? WORK the problems through IN-HOUSE. Schaub has his faults, but not seeing the QB out there so good he produces in SPITE of Kubiak. Where is the QB out there that will play to Kubiak's strengths? $64 million...
Schaub sucks, Kubiak sucks. They have had many years to get it right and they still look like amateurs, how many years are we going to give these guys to get it right?? 10 years?? 15 years?? As a Houstonian I get tired of hearing the phrase "Next year we will be better". It seems like we've been saying this **** about our teams for the better part of the last 20 years. I'm tired of waiting, either these scrubs start winning or get the hell out of town. I don't care which at this point, im just tired of mediocrity.
Well technically every year for the last 3 "was better". You can't demand that we get someone confident because we aren't improving, yet we are improving. Only a fan would think we should get rid of a coach who has just won the division in back to back years with a 12-4 record. It seems as if our success is measured against whether or not we can beat the Patriots, and that just isn't fair. I guess short of the fact that he's done it sooner, John Harbaugh is in the same position we're in, they've never had homefield advantage, they've lost to the Pats 2 years in a row (possibly 3), and yet I'm sure we believe he's light years better than Kubiak. I'm not saying Kubiak is Lombardi or something, but at the end of the day Kubiak has had 2 franchise record seasons in a row. Right now we just have a bad taste in our mouths because of the way the season ended, but if we would've been told that before the season we would play against Baltimore, Denver, Green Bay, NE, Detroit, and Chicago, and manage 12-4 we would've been ecstatic.
In hindsight, the money doesn't bother me. It's the timing. I guess I should have added "right side of the OL doesn't pan out and defense regresses" to the list of things that could go wrong with giving Schaub a contract before it was absolutely necessary. If Schaub was a free agent now, would the fate of our season be much different? Probably not. Signing Schaub does not and will not prevent us from drafting a QB (which is the only legitimate replacement option, despite what some people around here think, i.e. Flolacco) going forward, either. It was simply the timing that stunk. Not very business savvy. A very Texian move. A very loyal, battlefighty move. Same goes for Arian, too.
...because we could all go 12-4 in the NFL... 3rd best out of 15; 12-4 is mediocre? You know what "im" tired of? People hating on apostrophes. "Im" just sayin'...
At the time, I didn't like the extension because Schaub was coming off an injury and we didn't know how he would perform over the course of a season. If the Texans aren't going to go in a different direction at QB, yes we need some big upgrades on offense. If you are going to go with a slow footed QB without much arm strength, then you have to surround him with great talent to succeed. We need wide recievers, tight ends, offensive linemen, probably another running back. We need a lot. I don't necessarily think we need a new coach. If we have some real talent on offense, then that frees Kubiak up to do a lot more than just hand the ball off to Foster or throw short passes. Andre Johnson had a great year, but he was the only special player maker we had on offense this year.
I think Matt is simply too comfortable He has no worry of losing money He has no worry of losing his starting position Rocket River
Why shouldn't he be comfortable? Who else are we going to get? Please don't throw out any of these NFC Rejects (Romo, Vick, A.Smith etc.). And for those people who want us to go out and get a rookie QB to save the franchise, remember that for every Andrew Luck, there's 2 or 3 Christian Ponder's. The reason these guys have made such a large storyline is because it's not normal for rookies (and really young guys) to make a large impact. In the 2011 draft 4 qb's were taken in the 1st round (the round that usually means your the best), and of the 4, 3 of them will be average at best. (Ponder, Gabbert, Locker) and only 1 of them has shown the ability to be great (Cam Newton). In the 2010 draft, not a single NFL caliber quarterback was taken: Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, Joe Webb, John Skelton, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, Mike Kafka.....and so on. I understand that we could definitely use an upgrade at this position, but we also need a lot of other things before we'll be able to turn the corner. (#2 WR, #2 ILB, #3 CB, #2 TE, a coaching staff that can make adjustments, and a defense that can at least try to confuse an offense)
I think the whole "comfortably" argument is pretty flimsy in most cases. I can see that with certain guys but I don't see Schaub as taking it easy and coasting. He's known for putting in the extra hours before and after practice and he does come across as wanting to win badly.
Matt comes across as someone who doesn't want to **** up badly. Blame Favre all you want for making mistakes that cost his teams games but he took chances because he wanted to win badly. Sometimes you need a QB that has a little but of "aw **** it" in him.
At least we aren't bronco's fans. With our elite qb taking us no farther than tebow. Even worse....said qb being as old as he is.... I could only imagine how this site would be if schaub had thrown an int to lose a close one like that... .....now don't get me wrong. I really wish we had a mobile qb for this offense.
We had a better record but still had the same results in the playoffs. And with the QB who everyone said was the reason we didn't make it into the superbowl last year. If you are only taking into consideration the regular season, then the Texans have become the Atlanta Falcons of the AFC. Its not about how good you do in the regular season, its about how good you do in the playoffs. I mean NYG won the superbowl twice with a 9-7 record going into the playoffs. So 2 franchise record seasons in the REGULAR SEASON really doesn't mean much. Unless all you are worried about is how good we can do in the regular season.
have you not seen his body language? he is a loser, he doesn't even smile! Regards, seen too many csi episodes and now expert on body language guy. With the schaub extension, I thought if Brees could be harassed by the front office so can any qb in the league. The loss of Briesel and Winston hurt badly but the organization believes in the players they've invested in, even though most general managers here in the forum believe he can't throw a one yard pass to save his life.
I think he's amazing at throwing one yard passes, even 3 yard passes. It just sucks he does it when it's 3rd and 10.
can you get a list of qb rankings of best 3rd and 10 passers? I just remember luck being number one. when you're wasting downs running the ball for zero yards on first and second, nothing good is going to happen. And since that detroit game, it seems that was the game plan. Not enough creativity to get receivers open.
How do you figure he come across as someone who wants to win badly??? Clearly not be his on the field play and demeanor. He may be first on last off but it sure as hell doesn't look like he's doing anything to improve some of his deficiencies. Between his comments, kubes and mcnairs it sounds like they are completely satisfied w his play... I sure hope that isn't the case. If anyone needs a fire lit under his butt it is him.
It sucks equally so that Kubiak tries to rely on YACs so much that on these 3rd and longs you see the go-to option is usually running a route 2-3 yards shy of the line to gain.
sometimes wanting to win badly and great work ethic still don't translate to results on the field because a lack of talent. maybe he's reached his ceiling. it doesn't mean he doesn't want to win. no one can convince me that Matt Schaub isn't trying. unfortunately, his best may not ever be good enough.
i don't think he's not trying, i just think that the Texans brass is telling him over and over again that what he is doing and the qb he is is sufficient.
