You may not be familiar with the Nick Collison contract extension from a couple of years ago. Here's a link although there are probably better explanations out there: http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports....r-get-creative-with-nick-collison’s-contract/

So I'm proposing that Houston makes the same use of its 2013 cap space. I believe the sort of contract that I've proposed is allowed although I could be wrong. I think I'm right, though!

That's wrong, so consider yourself corrected :D

Contracts are not allowed to take a big jump in salary like that from year to year, unless it's a raise from under the Gilbert Arenas restriction (the so-called "poison pill").

You can't pay them $16.4M one year, and then $7.87 the next year in the same contract. The amount that it can decrease each year is the same as the amount that it can increase each year. This annual raise/paycut is restricted to either 4.5% or 7.5% depending on whether you used bird rights to sign them or not.

$16.4M to $7.87M is over 50% salary change, way over the limit of 4.5% or 7.5%. You can't manipulate pay distribution within a contract like that.

Steve Kyler: RT @alqj24: Is there truth to the rumors of Lakers liking Tyreke Evans? ---> The team won't be taking on payroll during a sale. Twitter @stevekylerNBA

That's a signing bonus for an extension, not the actual "annual pay" set forth in the contract. Furthermore, the signing bonus is limited to 15% of the extension's value.

The Collison loop hole does not apply in the Millsap situation. Also, the new CBA took care of it.

You misread the tweet. He is talking about the Maloofs selling the Kings.

It was renegotiation of a contract. If Millsap was under contract next year and you traded for him, you could use your next year's cap space to boost his next year's salary. And then get him take a paycut on extension.
Can't do this with free agents.

His contract expires this year, there is nothing to renegotiate next season even if you trade for him right now.

Basically, what Carl Herrara, DonatasFanboy, and Skyhoop all said.

The Collison situation was a simultaneous renegotiate-and-extend. Those are still permitted under the new CBA, but teams can no longer "front-load" them so heavily as the Thunder did with Collison. I actually talk (briefly) about it in my Chandler Parsons contract analysis:

(Man, do you even READ my articles?! :p )

Would you guys be interested in Steve Nash, if the price was fairly cheap?

On an unrelated to Rockets trade:

Milwaukee out: Monta Ellis, Samuel Dalembert
Milwaukee IN: Danny Granger, Miles Plumlee, filler

Indiana out: Danny Granger, Miles Plumlee, filler
Indiana IN: Monta Ellis, Samuel Dalembert

Throw in future draft picks? http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ao8sq2h

Pacers get a shooting guard and back up center for Hibbert. Paul George will blossom in his natural position at the 3 spot.

Bucks will finally get a capable scorer at the 3 spot next to Jennings. Dalembert's minutes will be allocated to John Hensen. Thoughts?

The Lakers would never trade Nash unless he asks for it. Nash took less money to sign there to chase a ring and stay close to family. If the Lakers want to remain the prime destination for future Malones, Paytons, Nashs and Jamisons, they have to protect their rep.

Donatas, out of curiousity what team are yoy a fan of..? We go back from our fantasy drafts and trade talks bur im curious?

Anyways im curious how you feel about your team, whoever that is...your one of the few who posts in my random nba trades thread...?btw, your clv ideas are legit..)...

Millsap is nice, and admittantly i was biased because his draft position and athleticism, but he is likely better than aldridge... i feel like we would need two millsap level players next to harden, along with solid role players in order to contend...

Houston Out: Marcus Morris, Jeremy Lin, Cole Aldrich
    Houston In: Rajon Rondo

Go after Iggy, Dwight or Josh Smith along with a vet like Rip Hamilton or an under appreciated upcoming free agent.

His ideas are legit mainly because he isn't a rockets fan, which means he doesn't have any Rockets bias in the trades. That's actually a great thing to have here, some of these trades can get ridiculous

how I feel about them... They rock! The Pacers right now look like one of the best defenses of all time. For instance, check this:
    http://www.basketball-reference.com...=gt&c4val=&order_by=opp_fg_pct&order_by_asc=Y
Only 5 teams in the NBA history allowed lower opponent FG% than the Pacers this year. Three Duncan teams, Van Gundy Knicks, Alonzo Heat. That's it. Van Gundy '04 Rockets and '04 championship Pistons also right around there with the current Pacers. And the Pacers are doing it in an era of better offense.

Obviously, one defensive stat doesn't do full justice and it's still only midseason, but the Pacers look fine. If Granger is 100% by the playoffs, I think we have a shot to go all the way. Other than the Heat, I think we'd be favorites vs. anyone in the East, if healthy.

The only downside is that the fanbase is small-ish, the forum is small-ish, so when it comes to general non-Pacers NBA discussion, this place is much more fun.
