But every patient is their own patient...its not oncology...but hocus-pocus medicine...treating someone without symptoms of a disease is confusing to me...who knows...im young in my profession, but this may be common practice now...i just find it disturbing...

It's her body. Who are we to tell her what to do with her body?

They aren't treating the disease, they are trying to prevent it. There is surely a line where proactive measure may not make sense, but it sounds like she's in a pretty unique situation with a ton of warning signs. I don't see how that's "hocus pocus".

You may not agree, but that doesn't mean it's not a reasonable decision...or that something is "wrong with her".

    Its not so much that

You can't value certain IDENTITIES and tout living within moderation and being humble. Can't advocate not getting fat, can't have a "no PEDs" stance,

and then people people they can ALTER whatever they want with themselves. Because people are weird.

There ARE LIMITS to that. Is it okay for her to get 8 BOOBS instead of the ones she has? lol. Thats how people ARE. It is a slippery slope. "Body politics" basically. Though yeah in her case it makes practical sense.

I thought i was overrreacting as well...but then i called my mother who has been in the profession for more than 40 years...asking quite frankly...if you have strong family history but no evidence of cancer...do you get prophylactic surgery...without hesitation she said no...you dont treat without symptoms...

Living in fear of breast cancer is a psych issue...she lost very close relatives because of this devastating disease...but if she doesnt have it...she isnt doing it for medical reasons...anyways i said my piece...just wanted to share a story...

I wouldn't call this treatment...I'd call it prevention. She's not asking for chemo to TREAT cancer...she's asking for a procedure to prevent ever getting it knowing her risk factors are high.

Bottom line is it's her call.

Is your mom or anyone for that matter object to women getting breast enhancements?

Just consider this woman getting a breast reduction.

It's certainly a more aggressive and new way to approach it when it comes to someone with strong warning signs. Like I said, can't say I agree or disagree, but I understand both sides.

Personally, I think I'd rather just have check ups a couple times a year. With that being said, I have no idea how mentally taxing it would be to constantly be paranoid so peace of mind could be a huge factor being overlooked.

Vaccines are medically proven to help curb disease and disease outcomes... Prophylactic mastectomies do not have medical literature as a means of treatment/disease prevention...

wait a second...you're saying risk of breast cancer can't be curbed by a masectomy?

    http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Therapy/preventive-mastectomy

How effective is preventive mastectomy in preventing or reducing the risk of breast cancer?

Existing data suggest that preventive mastectomy may significantly reduce (by about 90 percent) the chance of developing breast cancer in moderate- and high-risk women (2, 6, 7).

I'm sure she can get implants right? There are no cancer cells anyways so why not just replace her fatty tissue with implants? Do nipples have a chance at contracting cancer?
