I've noticed A LOT of people do this. Continuing to squeeze the handle a few or several more times even when it automatically clicks off. Majority of the time the excuse is that they want to round to the nearest dollar to make paying easier but it makes no sense for people that prepaid with debit or credit to do it... yet they still do it. Is there any benefit to topping off gas?
As long as you don't overfill it and it ends up on the ground or the side of your car, why not top it off? The more gas you get in there, the farther you can go without having to stop for gas again. I know after the first click in my Land Rover I can get another gallon or so just by pulling the nozzle out about an inch.
More gas in the car = Longer distance that can be traveled without having to fill up again... /thread
My dad spent 30 years in a refinery. I once told him I topped off. The lecture I received, complete with condescension, horror stories, and some stuff I'm pretty sure he just made up, convinced me to never do it again. Just no good reason to.
Same here. I don't like not leaving it to the nearest round number. Plus, after waiting in those long ass Costco lines, I believe I deserve every drop of gas.
I don't top off to extremes, but sometimes after the valve trigger hits, I push the lever that stops the gas and squeeze the nozzle to get every last drop.
It’s easy to want to leave the gas nozzle in your tank at the station to round out the sale. However, topping off your gas at the tank not only adversely affects the environment—your wallet takes a negative hit as well. Your gas nozzle is designed to automatically click off for a reason—to alert you that your tank is full. When you top your gas tank off, most of the time the gas reverses, flowing directly into the station’s tank again because your gas tank is already full. Your tank doesn't get any fuller, and your wallet only gets emptier. Gas station pumps today are designed with vapor recovery systems. These preventative systems stop gas vapors from escaping and affecting air pollution levels. The station’s vapor recovery system can, however, operate incorrectly or fail entirely when you top off your gas—further polluting the environment. Your gas also needs room to expand inside your gas tank. When you top off your gas, you leave little or no room for gas to expand, causing the gas to collect in the vapor collection system of your car. If the system fails to function properly, your car can have high gas emission as a result. http://cbac.com/blog/don-t-top-your-gas-tank
Why do people top off gas? The same reason black guys pork fat, ugly white girls... It is something to do.
This is one of the great mysteries in life. P.S. I don't top off. I used to when we paid with debit cards and cash. It made paying easier. Now I don't give a crap if it's 72.98.
I don't even fill up my tank when I pump. It's a habit of mine plus why carry that extra weight around? I normally just do halfers.
