This looks like a family situation, are you saying we should be strapped 24/7 in case somebody we personally know takes us hostage?

ok.. here's another movie theater shooting that happened recently (last month!).. you'd figure with the one in Colorado happening so recently.. it would be news.. but this one was stopped by someone with a firearm and had a good ending. I guess it's not news if it's against the media / govt agenda.

So what happens when you arm a teacher and then the teacher goes nuts?

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2013/01/noted_wo_comment_1.php?ref=fpblg

    From ABC News10 …

Steven Davis is a math and science teacher at Mount Anthony Union High School. Neighbors had asked police to do a welfare check after seeing him carry a rifle to his car.

He also raised public safety concerns after he posted videos on the internet criticizing school administrators, the teachers union and coworkers - even sending a school-wide email saying he would “remove the union and all of the teachers who are negatively affecting the children in this town.”

After the welfare check Sunday evening, Davis’ wife and children went to stay with a relative and she sought a restraining order the following day. According to the order, his wife was unaware that Davis owned a gun and said she and others have noticed a change in Davis’ personality over the last month.

The local CBS station reports that Davis has now being held at the hospital on an involuntary basis.

The Bennington Banner has more information from from Bennington Police Chief Paul Doucette …

“This weapon was in a case. It has a trigger lock installed, but it was alarming to find two, 30-round, high-capacity magazines loaded,” Doucette said.

On Monday morning, Davis began posting videos that criticized school administrators, the teachers union and co-workers, among a slew of other topics. Davis also sent a school-wide email saying he would “remove the union and all of the teachers who are negatively affecting the children in this town.”

“I think that he’s probably driven at this point and wants to get out and push some of his ideas forward. There’s no doubt in my mind, at all, that he’s very concerned about the way that he’s been treated by the supervisory union. He’s very angry at the teachers union itself for going on strike last year,” Doucette said.

The content Davis posted online struck fear in some members of the community as well as co-workers and students who were concerned for Davis’ safety.

“We were getting inundated with telephone calls from school teachers because he was sending out emails. He was posting stuff on Facebook and it became disturbing to some people,” Doucette said.

I'm not advocating this, but I would fully support trained, armed personnel (cops, security) at schools.

Given the amount of cops and drug dogs that were at my public high school in Houston in the early 90's, I was a little surprised that this wasn't the norm already.

    Here's a totally serious question...

Why doesn't the government just initiate a major tax increase on the sales of all ammunition? It seems it would be harder to get ahold of ammunitions of certain kinds on the black market than guns. Once you get the guns, if the bullets are tough to get, you wouldn't have as many mad men going off killing these people.

So, say it costs $20 a bullet. Say a mandatory $15 of that goes towards the government. Of that, $10 goes towards a government fund to aid victims of gun violence and to programs that prevent gun crime. The other $5 goes towards parks and public services and youth programs.

This works in two ways. It lets gun nuts keep their guns. It lets hunters hunt. But it would make it a lot harder to have mass shootings, while bringing in revenue that would increase funding towards much needed programs.

Yes, I'm serious in this. I didn't know if it deserved its own thread, though. I want to know what you think.

Millions of people load their own ammo. Taxing ammo is a useless tactic.

how do you define "gun nut"?

It's interesting the response to an evil madman is to malign the character of law abiding citizens and attempt to restrict their freedom.

which mass shooting would have been prevented?

Yes, restrict their freedom to own a weapon capable of tearing open entry ways into restricted buildings and that can makes holes you can see through in people's bodies.

Why do we restrict people's freedoms to own bombs, rocket launchers, nukes - doesn't a citizen have a right to defend themselves?

Here is a simple test to determine if someone is a gun nut. If one's first reaction to the Sandy Hook mass shooting is "Those damn liberals are going to want to take our guns away now." then that person is a gun nut. Don't act like those people do not exist. There are quite a few right wing nuts who honestly believe that Obama and his administration are honestly trying to find reasons to take guns away from citizens in some extravagant plan to disarm the civilian populace in order to start a dictatorship with Obama being the dictator. I hope you believe these people are irrational.

Exactly why there's no point in listening to your small but vocal minority- and why most people find your/Gun lobbys intransigence in the face of repeated tragedy so repugnant.

Dead enders like you have made your arguments and lost. Enjoy the new laws- I will.

Small but vocal minority? On Clutch Fans, yes. In America, no. There's a reason gun and ammo sales are currently through the roof and NRA membership has skyrocketed. Nearly half of all adult Americans have guns, considering there are nearly 90 million gun owners. Even if Obama uses an executive order to enact laws, it'll never hold up in the Supreme Court. We survived Clinton's gun law changes, we'll survive Obama's as well. It is quite inept to think otherwise. Either way, there are north of 300 million guns in legal circulation... they're not going anywhere.

You have a clear majority on a fan forum, CONGRATULATIONS!

Syp, best not to engage posts like that, losing proposition

notice the typical tactics; declarations of intellectual and moral superiority, appeals to popular opinion, maligning of those giving a contrary argument

pretty much the opposite of "Debate and Discussion"

Yes, I assumed this "TEH PREZIDUNT HAZ TEH ARMD GARDS!" was on Fox news today. My parents were on about it this morning.

Of all the insipid arguments ever launched, that's a whopper. I mean, if I used the eye-roll icon... this would be the time. SMDH.
