Are you using (possibly) made up hardware numbers from one source and trying to use them together with made up software numbers from another source? Not to mention the first is shipped while the latter is sold (and the latter has different hardware numbers, partly because of that).

No point in even trying to do anything with those. Either use the shipped figures from the financial reports from each company (actually already provided, more or less, in this thread), or use the bad numbers from the same source (actually...don't do that, although it would be more consistent).

I don't know what we're discussing at this point, though I should note that while 360 hardware sales aren't great in the region, software sales (given the install base) aren't too bad (basically, very "hardcore" gamers buy 360s there).

OK, but my original point was just that the numbers you were using were likely made up (at least partially), and tie-ratios of the two consoles are probably about the same (implying we should drop the "BLU-RAY/RRoD!/etc" talk when trying to "adjust" the figures).

Not trying to have a "which business/console is making more money/winning/etc.?" discussion.

My sources are from NPD. Even the Microsoft quarterly earnings quote NPD.

NPD is US only, and sales only (and as mentioned before, the 77/76 figures are worldwide and shipped).

I bought a refurbished 360 for $200 or $250. I had it for about 4 years, then sold it to Gamestop for $150. I couldn't believe I got that much for it. I used that money to buy the 360s at Xmas 2011 for $200.

I never had any issues with either system. And the only reason I bought a 360 vs a PS3 was because I wanted Fable 2.

I got my PS3 free with my Sony laptop. It currently acts as a decommissioned 3d Blu Ray player. I played Halo 4 last Sunday. You tell me which console I like more...

Trick question, it's the Wii U that I like the most. Thanks for playing.

We have Sing It, Mario Bro's Wii U, we had Wipeout (don't get it, it's horrible, I immediately exchanged it out), and Nintendoland. Honestly, Nintendoland is somewhat of a steal to get for free with the console. I love it. The controls are amazing and new, but somehow I pick them up and use them like I've been playing with them my entire life. The new touchscreen gives games a new dimension. Games like the hide and seek game are just incredible. There are other games where you go back and forth between the small screen and the big one and they are also fun. Mario Bro's Wii U allows my girlfriend, and admittedly horrible Mario player actually join in and play with me instead of either holding me back or sitting on the sidelines watching. I love this console. Essentially it bridges the gap between the l33t games and the novice ones.

Ps3 surpasses the 360 just 1-2 years before the release of the 720

    Question for you tech guys:

Why isn't there a comprehensive app for the PSN? App to see who is online, what they are playing, and to send them messages (back and forth)

I don't have a PS3 anymore and haven't for years, so I'm not exactly sure what it's like now. But remember, PS3 leaves multi-player up to the developer, while Microsoft provides an SDK and a platform for mutli-player to piggy back on with Xbox Live. This is a reason Xbox 360 had exclusives for so many years, it is simply far easier to develop for. Sony has outright bought some exclusives back in a bid to win fans over, which has worked.

And for the people saying Xbox live is a premium service, to play online it is but you can still see your friend's activity without Live Gold.

I do remember when people thought that Playstation Home was going to dominate the gaming world.

In the end, Steam is my master anyway.

I assumed he meant a mobile app (or something along those lines). You can do all of that on a PS3 already.

My answer would be that this is Sony. Takes them years to take advantage of something obvious, especially on the software front.

The PS3 should have crushed the Xbox. It is superior hardware and they had the most successful modern console in the PS2. The only reason Microsoft is even in consideration is because they are a software company that built hardware and made it EXTREMELY EASY to program for.

I remember when the PS3 first launched all of the nightmare dev stories that came about. After a few years people have gotten used to the ridiculously difficult SDK for PS3 and the games have shown that. I just remember pre-loading games for like an hour before even playing them during launch year... which was the exact reason I got rid of my PS3.

There's no shortage of reasons for why the PS3 didn't crush the 360 (and no single reason was why, given how complex these markets are). Though Sony being so far behind on the software side of things was definitely a big factor. Beyond just being more difficult hardware to develop for (which, IMO, is acceptable if the hardware is better designed), they just weren't ready to launch it (even with the delay). Even just looking at the differences in the OS from launch to now is astounding. IIRC, launch PS3s didn't even scale video/games (or didn't scale them properly). You can imagine how much the developer tools must have improved over time. Guess it was better than PS2, but really should have been better on day 1.

Though looking back at it, developers were struggling with next-gen development in general during that time period. Kudos to all the tools developers who helped create the multiplatform engines/tools that help create the stuff we see today.

Yes, I was referring to a mobile app. Interoperability is definitely lacking in the mobile department

Definitely glad I returned my 360 after a week and went with the PS3. Most of my favorite titles ended up being PS3 exclusives.

Ironically the game I originally bought the PS3 for was soon announced to be multiplat...

One thing I do love about Xbox 360 is Smart Glass. I love controlling my TV/Xbox with my tablet. Can't wait to see how games integrate it in the future and Kudos to Microsoft for not limiting the platforms, you can get it for iOS and Android too.

My Xbox is basically a glorified Netflix box these days though.
