Granted, he's already 26 years old, but have the Spurs found another diamond in the rough? The Spurs are pretty conservative with their money and they already have some depth at PF/C so this is a pretty big investment. Word says Aron has been dominating Europe and I saw a couple highlights which show he's pretty bulky and athletic. Anyone want to share what they know about this guy?

For that long a deal, that's what you'd expect. I honestly expected David Andersen upon reading Aussie big man.

Oh, I believe it's structured like a rookie contract. 2 years guaranteed + 2 years team option.

Hope he doesn't amount to anything much. Don't want them getting stronger.

He's really strong and quite athletic. he plays like an old school big man also. Everything is physical and with meaning. He's a good player.

He wasn't dominating in Europe though. His team was one of the worst in Euroleague, with a 2-8 record, and got eliminated at the first stage of the season.

Connection with SA AC Brett Brown and the Australian National team. Baynes was probably the only guy that impressed me throughout the olympics on the Boomers. Straight out Hustle, think of him as the white Greg Smith .

Why does he have no shoes?

Somebody get this man some shoes.

    This is a travesty.

    Ok, Aussie basketball fan here.

The Spurs have NOT signed a diamond in the rough. This guy is nothing more than a 'hustle and energy' guy.

He played in the Australian Olympic squad, and looked overmatched against almost every big man he went against. There are a host of other big men (who are Australian) that would have been better selections for the Olympics.

Having said that, Baynes has an 'NBA body' and 'real size'. He's 7' tall and 260lbs and can hustle. He won't ever be any kind of star, he won't be a 'featured player' in anyone's offensive system (ever) - but I guess he'll be passable as an end of bench depth kind of guy.

Don't fear, the Spurs didn't "win" here!!

A bruiser with bad hands. He looked ineffective against Team USA. This guy has not been dominating Europe, just a guy getting stats on a bad team.

His efficiency number in euro league really stands out with very strong rebounding rate this season. I'd say he's definitely a diamond in the rough.

Man, they are paying his buyout plus his salary and he doesn't even come with shoes? Crickey!

He's a good center. Very big, very strong, and athletic. He tries to dunk everything, he tries to back people down in the post, he bangs, plays physical.

However, those numbers are hugely inflated. They are very inflated, much like Motiejunas' numbers were. It's getting stats on really terrible Euroleague teams. It wouldn't translate to anything near that in stats on even an average level Euroleague team.

    He's a good player though.

It's the Spurs. They will create a role and he will fill it.

When a team is solid adding a complementary piece is different than being one of the 'other' 20 or so NBA teams.

It could be inflated, but his euro league PER and rebounding rate is WAY better than Motiejunas'. Purely by this season's numbers, he's going to be more productive and valuable than the young Scola.

Looks like this is in response to Tiago Splitter moving into the starting lineup and a possible showing of the door to DeJuan Blair.

I'm just saying, he played one of the probably 1-2 worst teams in Euroleague. So the stats are not what they appear to be. It was the same case with Motiejunas, although that was even more exaggerated as his team was beyond horrible.

He's a good center to me because he really is a bruiser. He's old school and country strong. i like those types of centers. But, if he was in a good Euroleague team, his stats would have been greatly reduced.

Watched him a lost while he was playing in Slovenia this season. Baynes'll be nothing more than an energy guy off the bench in NBA, but he does it very well and doesn't mess around.
