Not surprised to see some fluff in this thread (Candy Dulfer, Kenny G, etc)... Where to start? Well there is any Andy Mackay solo on various Roxy Music songs just like any John Helliwell solo on various Supertramp songs and of course the big man, Clarence Clemons (nice pick ferrari). Then you have the entire "Saxophone Colossus" album by Sonny Rollins and some of Coltrane's best before he went the free jazz route in the albums "Blue Train", "Giant Steps", and "My Favorite Things". But my favorite Coltrane solo is right here (ignore all the goofy ads): <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5Pi5ZJZ07ME" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> For the adventuresome, listen to anything by Albert Ayler and Pharaoh Sanders as well as stuff by John Gilmore of Sun Ra's Arkestra and the entire "Machine Gun" album by German free jazz badass, Peter Brotzmann. My all-time sax solo is by Joe Henderson on Horace Silver's legendary "Song for my Father" - take a listen around the 4 minute mark (but you should listen to the whole thing because it is that damn good): <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CWeXOm49kE0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Awesome... a fellow Tower of Power fan. Here's another album from my collection... this one a Direct to Disk (back in the days when playing albums meant something). There are other bands, and other saxophonists out there... but I will get a shiver listening to What is Hip and Below Us All the City Lights
smooth and subtle sax solo from one of my favorite songs <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QjFRHIhSvwc?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I'm surprised somebody here knows who Chris Vadala is. I saw him play here in town about 12 years ago. No offense to Leroi Moore (RIP), but Jeff Coffin is an absolute freak on the saxophone. One of the most amazing players out there, regardless of genre. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lUMGSr3b67g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Jungleland is great but I'll take the solo in Born to Run (even if it is only 15 sec): <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/sycdeHBN0HU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
