Can somebody explain to me why there is an ongoing "Fire Kevin McHale" thread when the Rockets are very obviously the biggest surprise team in the entire league? Isn't he obviously one of the leading candidates for NBA Coach of the Year? Do people really have nothing better to complain about? My god!
Hopefully you are not just now realizing how many people are on this board with little to no basketball knowledge...are you?
The last 5-10 pages are just people making fun of OP and saying how great Mchale is doing. So, it's basically just the "Official Praise Mchale Thread" now.
I have come to really like McHale as a coach, I think the early season rotations and questionable coaching can be chalked up to learning about the players, their game style and making the pieces work. By the end of the season, we'll have a way clearer idea of where our team needs to improve - whether it be defence, coaching, particular players of whatever. Also, in the off-season, I hope McHale teaches someone his sweet post-moves <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wdtgUOiWHJg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
You can tell Asik has been working on his offensive game as time passes. Before, it was just catch and shoot. Now he's making a few moves, putting up a some hook shots. Showing some more variety under the basket. And this guy was an absolute stiff on offense back in his Chicago days. Whether it's McHale or Dawson or assistant coaches, the staff deserves credit for Asik's development as a player.
Have to give McHale & Co. some major credit for their recent success in getting Lin & Harden to complement each other better on the offensive end. Love the plays they have been running where they essentially pick each others man to get each other spacing to make a move to the basket. Rarely do you ever see guards running picks for each other, but this could a new way to get two P&R guards to coexist in the short term at least. For as much criticism as McHale takes on this board, you can't deny that he is one coach who plays to the strengths of the roster he is given. Never in a million years would you tell me that Kevin McHale(Mr defense, grind it out, post up big man) would have constructed the most fast paced team in the league this quick. If this team would have acquired Dwight instead of Harden, there is no doubt in my mind that McHale would have run a completely different style of offense. His willingness, and ability to play to his roster's strength isn't something you are going to find all accross the league. Alot of coach(cough, cough... D'Antoni) force their "system" onto their team despite the roster they are given. I think, even just for a minute, we need to give this guy & his staff some F-ing credit.
Credit to McHale. The Lin Harden PNR was definitely a smart move. Hopefully both players can develop it some more. It still looks a little bit rusty though.
I gotta say, I was very down on him as a coach after last year. But perhaps he just had the wrong players.
The locker room chemistry last year was totally different from this year as well. Last year, you had T-Will sulking on twitter (I guess Royce is his successor) and Lowry demanding to get traded if McHale stayed. This year, you have a group of young unselfish guys pulling for each other.
Just as I was starting to think "Hey, maybe McHale is finally cleaning up his crazy sarcastic major mistakes," McHale chucks up some low-20 minutes of Asik. I mean, I would fire him and hope for a coach whose coaching wouldn't need to be talked about, but I fear for somebody who makes even more major mistakes...like Casey...
Kevin shoudl be given credit for this, but I believe Chris Finch played a big role in the run-style offense we are playing and Morey gave him the pieces. Credit Mchale for putting it all together and executing but I believe the offensive genius is from Finch
