I like TD's defense when he is one-on-one on a player, very aggressive. But when he gets picked, man, it's like someone whacked him upside the head. He'll flit around aimlessly, stunned, for almost 10 seconds before he pulls himself together and starts defending again.

JLin's management of help defense is much better this year. He usually won't leave his man unless that player is more than a pass away from the ball, or unless it is clear the ball-handler is making a move to the basket. This keeps him from getting burned frequently, like he was with NY.

Then stop feeding the troll, what's the point arguing with someone who has zero knowledge about basketball on a basketball forum?

Defend is much much than filling up the stats sheet... Bruce Bowen had only 2.8 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 0.2 block per game in an average of 27.6 min of playing time throughout his career, but he is said to be one of the best defender in the last decade.

    Defense is 50% desire and 50% skill/talent.
You can be a passable defender if you wish to be in the nba.

Lin overall is about average because he seems to have the desire to. He can be more cerebral if he wants to be above average. He will never be elite, but then we don't need him to be.

Top ten in steals on a winning team. I think he's better than "about average". Calvin Murphy seems to think so as well.

Watch the game. Top 10 in steals does not mean you are a good defender.
Who else is in top 10? James Harden, brandon jennings, kemba walker. Lol.
You must also think that because kobe is all defensive team, that he plays great defense night in and out, or because tim duncan was never defensive player of the year, he was not one of generations best defensive anchors?
Calvin murphy's version of defense has always been score more than the other guy.
Stats is misleading without context. And Jeremy Lin is not a good defensive player.

TD is a pretty good defender. He has been the better defender for the most part. I especially like him in the 4th.

has someone posted the synergy defensive numbers yet?
Lin and TD? This season Lin's been a pretty good one-on-one defender top 70? TD isn't too far off either.

I'm beginning to like the idea of them both being on the floor at the same time more.

TD is more experienced than Lin in defense, and he is a guy that really can push up the tempo of the game, but he may also cost you transitional D.

Stats like this will unfortunately fall on deaf ears.

You can point to a host of advanced and simple box score stats as well as video plays of Lin playing good defense, you can show that opposing players score the most when they switch off Lin, or when Lin isn't even on the floor, and some people will always ignore the data and instead focus on their own personal opinions.

Steals/blocks - he gambles too much
    Rebounds - that's not defense
Synergy numbers/Defensive Rating - Advanced stats are misleading
Video links of Defense on players - Those are just one offs, he still is getting burned
High point scores with crappy FG%/TS% - Those players were scoring at will

    Just for reference...

    Steals/game - 9th among PG's
    Blocks/game - 7th among PG's
    Rebounds/game - 10th among PG's

    Synergy ratings (entire NBA)
    Overall PPP: 0.82, rank 115
    Isolation: 0.73 rank 72
    P&R Handler: 0.79, rank 94
    Spot-up: 0.97, rank 146

    Defensive Efficiency - 7th among PG's

    On/Off court Defensive stats - 105.7/108.5 (net -2.7)

Defensive Rating - 105 (40th in NBA out of 156 players in the Guard/Shooting guard position -- 10 game minimum) http://www.basketball-reference.com...t=&order_by=def_rtg&order_by_asc=Y&offset=100

    Defensive Win shares - 1.2

And of course let's ignore his multiple excellent individual defensive plays, like one on one vs Kobe, Lebron, shutting down Gallinari, last night's defense on Irving and then switching on to Dion Waiters and forcing a shot clock violation.

In some people's minds Lin is an average to poor defender, and no statistics, individual plays, or video will change their minds. They have their mind made up, and will always look for a "score" as proof of poor defense, completely disregarding that defense doesn't mean the other person doesn't score, it just means that they score less.

I think a lot of people have their own long-standing idea of what a good defensive player looks like and it will take time for Lin to overcome those "eye tests". He is making headway though. I think the debate is shifting from "he sucks" to "is he above average".
