Indeed I am talking about loop action. I called it flact cut acton because the vast majority of this board doesn't know what loop action is, however I would think they can at least imagine what we're talking about if we call it flat cut action instead. Pretty much nobody here knows what pistol, loop, etc... is, so I generally try to dumb it down a bit. I very well understand that the flat cut is just initiating the loop action and that there are various options to it. It seems to me however that if it's not Harden that's cutting from wing to wing we're not even looking for the other options and are just contend with iso-ing up Harden at the elbow area. So although there are other options you could go to off loop, I think at times the Rockets just use loop to set up an iso for Harden. The Blazers did the same thing under Nate McMillan setting up LMA on the block off loop action. So, while I wouldn't necessarily say that the Rockets have no set play call for an iso, I do agree that the Rockets rarely call of an iso from the side and that often it's just a set evolving into an iso, which is also one of my pet peeves with Synergy play charting.
and there are so many variations on each of these it gets quite complex. Would be great if we could get some videos of the Rockets running these types of plays in the game. Harden's Pistol action is quite common but I'd like to see how we are running the elbow action - I wasn't paying attention enough.
McHale went with Patterson, Parsons, Delfino, Harden, and Lin down the stretch tonight. 87-84 when McHale went with this lineup at the 5:56 mark. 104-92 when the game ended. For future reference.
Future reference?? Good win but still not sure how he goes from benching Lin to playing him over 40 min. Also he should've played Parsons more and Delfino more tonight.
He was terrible in the beginning. Has improved tons since he came back. What pisses me off is people thinking he was doing just fine in the beginning.
We lost a lot of close game due to stupidity. We lost to the blazers and all you heard was they are the better team. Patterson at center. Cole Aldrich before smith. T- douglass running the point crunch time..... On and on.
It is all about matchups: Douglas was getting destroyed by the bigger Hornets guards and Asik was out of place with jump-shooting centers. He coached and adjusted perfectly for the fourth quarter with the "small-ball" lineup.
Err, don't even remind me about the Blazers. Stupid subs. We'll get our revenge on them...we are the better team.
Not sure about that...Their length and shot-blocking give us fits. They're also athletic enough to catch up to us in transition.
We've had big leads in both games, and we're better now than we were then.(especially in close games down the stretch)

There are quite a few extremely knowledgeable, newer posters. Really glad to see you on here. Hope you keep posting and dropping that knowledge, along with the vets.
I have noticed that the loop action is one of the main sets the Rockets use. It is a set of "read and react" plays, as you showed by the different variations of the play. I think, if it is similar to how I learned, the main person to "read and react" is Harden, based on what position his defender is in (which makes sense, he probably has a better BB IQ than PPat and Asik due to experience). It is just another way Harden is so deadly. I am sure that they did not teach Patterson to set the flare screen. I think that is what is just infamously called "Playing basketball". Patterson has been stated of being a smart, veteran presence, which makes sense based on plays like this and his rotational defence. When Asik went to the weak-side short corner where Patterson was (what I took as evidence that this was not planned) and bumped PPat to the high post, it was just an ideal position to screen Lin's man. It looked like Davis did not talk on the screen either.
very nice work. i think some of these new guys are awesome and long what this forum has needed. I think some of these video clips should be put in it's own thread. Maybe a "Rocket Playbook" highlights thread.
