I think McHale's "old school" mentality and disinterest in stats hurts him in the end. We've heard earlier in the season that he holds advanced stats in low regard. It seems like if he was more open to input about what the stats say about the best rotations and performance on back to backs, it would help his coaching. I wonder if Morey and McHale every talk about this.
The thing is, Lin said the same thing as McHale (in different words, obviously). Lin said, "What comes around goes around with the schedule, so it's not a valid excuse for us." I can't say I understand or agree with McHale's rotation/minute-allocation, but on the other hand, I don't understand why fans would think coaches don't "trust" Lin/Asik (esp. Lin) whenever they see lesser minutes.
I notice Mike Woodson also says "this one's on me" and "this is on me" a lot too, when his team plays badly or when he criticizes a certain player. He also says a lot "I have to help him better" when a player has been struggling. McHale desn't take ownership of a loss. Last night he said something about us letting OKC make a 16 points run, but conveniently forgot that was right after his questionable substitution. McHale is doing a fine job. But he can definitely be a lot better.
not just Lin/Asik...it's not the first time...i just think he easily panicks and benches players who don't perform well.
I doubt panicking is the reason behind it. I mean, sometimes he pulls Lin out even when he's doing quite well. I don't think it's panic or a distrust for Lin/Asik, but whatever it is, I'd admit it's baffling and at times very frustrating for us fans to watch.
It is his rotation. Lin is out at 6 minutes regardless his performance. Maybe he hasn't play basketball for a while and doesn't understand when players do well, they get more energy
McFail is just flat out awful. I agree and have also mentioned in the past how he takes no responsibility for losses whatsoever. I also think mchale sees no value in a player other than how many points he has scored up to that point. Lin was playing adequate defense, was facilitating with 5 assists in the first quarter but because he hadn't scored at that point (0 attempts), Lin gets pulled. Hardn plays zero defense. I am tired of seeing lin play so hard on D which goes unrecognized by his coaches, he should save his energy for the offensive end... that is the only way he has a "good game" in ppl's minds. he needs to get his 15 shots a night every night. Also after a good recent run winning games with Lin playing point guard, looks like he has reverted to taking the ball out of Lin's hand, having TD or parsons taking up the court. Why??? Lin is not shooting his 3's well right now and after 30 games, you gotta think its a lost cause for this year. He has to be given the okay to shoot long twos or mid range shots, I don't care what the rockets philosophy is regarding the more "efficient" shot. 40% from mid range is a hell of a lot better than 15% from 3!
Either McHale doesn't understand his players or his system doesn't need a PG. The PG's job is not to score aggressively, but to facilitate the offense and get easy points. Regardless who is guarding Westbrook, he will gets his points. He is not the one you should be concerted, it is the other players. Listen to Gary Payton on his toughest match up. It is not MJ or Kobe, but John Stockton. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-cG7uUBYxo
Mchale isn't a bad coach. I don't understand his coaching subs but maybe it's all part of a big master plan, that we're not seeing.
Let's not forget Mchale is responsible for the Rockets drafting Royce White! "The rest of the room besides McHale says you're too risky..." Someone just tell us when mchale will go. With his ridiculous sub patterns nowadays its worst than the crooked refs and their biased foul calls!
In the many, many games when McHale had "questionable" subsitutions that led to wins, this thread inexplicably become eerily quiet. When he consistently make similar subsitutions in losses, no matter how difficult the competition, these subsitutions suddenly become "questionable." Also, I like how we've stopped using "McHale needs to play Jeremy Lin more" into "questionable substitutions." Yep, more subtle than before.
Isn't this White's agent saying this? Unless you want to take his word for it, there's no evidence this was true.
I really am irritated that McHale refuses to play D Mo in meaningful minutes and continues to put Aldrich on the floor. Other than that he has done well so far, this year.
any mchale apologists feel like explaining away benching smith for cole the past few games? inexcusable.
"Inexcusable" ? Really? A coach does not have the leeway to try different things and see if they work? He is not allowed to make mistakes? Maybe Cole Aldridge has been looking good in practice and Smith hasn't. Newsflash: We weren't going to win the last two games no matter what the minute allocation was. We lost to more talented, more experienced teams. The aura of entitlement that you 2012'ers bring to this board annoying and frankly insulting to the Rockets organization. This team has overachieved thus far and has had impressive wins over the Hawks, Knicks, Bulls, Grizzlies, and Lakers. The coaching has been fine.
any mchale apologists feel like explaining away benching terrence jones for marcus morris the past few games? inexcusable oh wait... where are the people complaining about that now? remember when people hated marcus with a passion for the first few weeks? exactly
Inexcusable? Maybe McHale is trying determine if Cole can play or not. Decisions are going to have to be made and we will be approaching the trade deadline soon. Maybe Cole has been playing well in practice and McHale wanted to see if he could carry it over to a real game. This season is not only about winning games, it's about determining the capabilities of our players so we can make good decisions going forward. Cole hasn't played many meaningful minutes since we acquired him, so maybe McHale wants to see what be can do. Seems reasonable to me.
Stop the FRAUD!!! It is fraudulent to cash a pay-check and not show up for work. If he truly believes in the cause he's pursuing (better awareness for mental health), he should stop cashing Mr Alexander's cheques while giving nothing back in return.
