I stopped getting Christmas gifts since I was 10. If I want something, I'm old enough to buy it. Certainly don't need to wait until Christmas to get it either.

As for the guy wishing to get more stuff from his parents:

Finish school, get a job and buy your own stuff. Your dad's money is just that. Your dad's. He earned it. Let him enjoy it.

If it bugs you so much, don't take care of him when he gets old.

Some parents do. My point was, he is saying his dad is cheap. Based on his later comment, it seems he is getting to live with his dad (at 22 years old) for only $150 a month. That seems like a pretty good deal compared to having to pay rent at a house or apartment.

If I didn't know better, I'd think this thread was the poster child for:

It doesn't sound like you're "just curious" anymore. Why are you trying so hard to make the point that he has a good deal? Really, what does it matter that he's frustrated about not getting more acknowledgement from his parents?

Major thumbs down on those that think this is all about the value of the presents.

I side with Yung-T on this one. In my opinion in this situation the gifts reflect how much his dad cares for him as a son. That sounds a bit weird as I'm not materialistic at all and we don't spend that much on Christmas at home. Please let me explain and don't take it out of context.

The point of this is love and attention. It sounds like Yung-T's dad is giving all of his true attention to his new girlfriend and not to his own flesh and blood. It's not about the value of the gift but rather the relative expenditure. I would have hated it had my dad spent $10 on me at 13 years old and hundreds upon thousands on a girlfriend. I don't get how it seems thankless. It's obvious his dad is giving his girlfriend the attention, love and cash and his son is an extra.

He should just be thankful he is alive? Err, okaaay. He probably wants a close relationship with his dad very badly. Should he just be happy that his dad doesn't beat him up every day and feed him dog crap for breakfast lunch and dinner? Excuse him for wanting to have a loving relationship with his dad. Relationships are more important than money, rent and all the rest of that crap. It sounds like Yung-T only wants that.
