People who trash Morey don't know how godawful the vast majority of NBA GMs are.

If you list all the NBA GMs who had team without playoffs appearance 3 years in a row in the last 10 years, Morey is ranked right with them. Nothing more, nothing else.

Make a list of what teams lost 2 legitimate superstars with pretty much nothing in return. People always seem to forget that part.

It's mainly up to the players to make the playoffs, not the GM. Morey has a myriad of other responsibilities (of course including roster recruitment) to go along with being credited/discredited for stats in the win/loss column.

To disregard all the little things (some of which can have huge future impacts) that Morey has done accomplished is shortsighted at best. How teams have gone through a successful rebuild without tanking, alongside acquiring a new bevy of international fans and revenue? The future is bright in Houston. It must be tough being you until the day the Rox go on an inevitable future losing streak so you can hang it over Cluthfans' head with a thread titled "Still Not Sold on Morey".

I like Morey, liked him more 2-3 years ago but I still like some of his moves.

That being said, just because a snot covered tissue is better then one with fecal matter, doesn't mean you should give either to a loved one.

Morey has made questionable decisions, drafting multiple undersized Power Fowards (and questionable first round selections in general), his carousel he has made of the Point Guard position and the jury is still out on his decisions at our current coaching status. How this year turns out will be make or break for Morey, while he has had some good spots, he is far from the perfect GM and above questioning.

Those undersized Power Forwards you speak of, were drafted because they were the BEST PLAYER available or high upside. If you're selecting because of need then you're doing it wrong.

Bad coaching decision? How's Lawrency Frank (detroit) and Dwane Casey (Raptors) doing? Adleman wasn't happy with all the moves Morey was making and that's why he got the boot.

Spurs GM and Morey are at the top.

I think Presti is getting a bad rap here. Sure, he's gotten lucky. But he basically picked the best player at his draft position with those top-5 picks. Not always a given. Westbrook and Harden were both somewhat of a reach given the mock drafts at the time. He also found Ibaka with a late pick, who is better than any of Morey's picks over the years so far.

So would Sam Presti though. Also by this logic, Danny Ferry is one of the best GMs of the decade.

Executive of the Year may be the least credible award in the league based on past winners. It is often squandered on whoever happens to manage a team that made a sudden turnaround from one season to the next, irrespective of how much of a role that executive may have even played in that improvement.

But you didn't even have to read all that. All you need to know is that Bryan Colangelo won Executive of the Year twice.

I like most of Morey's player personnel moves, but Adelman gets fired for McHale???

No, Adelman got fired for internal disagreements between Adelman, management, and ownership that were never really elaborated upon because everybody involved is a professional in this league.

    McHale was just his replacement.

We really differentiating between "fired" and "not retained" or "fired" and "contract not renewed"? Really? Is that what we're doing?

Actually there is. When negotiating for a new contract, both sides have input on what they want to be done in the future. The assistants to hire, the length of years, etc. Morey wanted some new blood into the staff with Finch. Adelman wanted a deal where he can basically hand off the team to Turner. Morey wanted to bring Adelman back, but only with caveats. While Adelman did not like those terms. "Fired" in the NBA sense means the Rockets disliked Adelman's job and was willing to eat his salary rather than keeping him on the team.

In the end, Adelman "separation of church and state" while Morey wanted an integrated system. That seemed to be the biggest disconnect that led to the parting. Not saying who's right or who's wrong, just difference of opinions.

Let me rephrase. Replacing Adelman with McHale was a big negative in my opinion. I think Morey has been very good for us for the most part, but I'm not a fan of McHale as a head coach. With that said it doesn't mean we can't win with him at the helm. Lots of teams have won with bad coaches and in spite of the coaching.

If we kept Adelman, we don't get Harden.

He left because he didn't want roster turnover, and wanted stability with a core of Lowry/Martin/Scola/Hayes. Morey on the other hand wanted to keep trying to upgrade the roster irregardless of stability, until they could get someone to build around.

I'll take a Harden over 10 Adelman's. Kevin Love found that out tonight first hand.

This is a pointless hate because it's impossible to prove or disprove in any sense of the word. I can claim that McHale is far superior to Adelman and that this team with Adelman would only be 14-14. That Adelman sucks bananas and can't outcoach a guy that missed half the season due to his daughter's plight. And I'd have just as much proof backing up my assertion.

Semantics. "Fired" in the NBA sense doesn't mean what you say it means, it means the man has a job and then he doesn't, per decisions beyond his control. If you disagree with your employer about something, and then you don't have a job with that employer going forward, it doesn't matter how many synonyms or strained explanations we resort to--that man has been canned. If you want to buy into the cheesy, face saving mutuality of it, that's fine. In fact, I'd even prefer you did, as there's no good reason Rick Adelman should not be able to continue to find work in the league after coaching the Rockets. The way the Adelman termination was handled was a great example of how to part ways the right way, so as to tarnish neither the coach nor the organization.

What? The disagreements they had are subject to sheer speculation because Adelman and the Rockets are both classy enough to keep it that way. So you're kind of talking out your ass and making this up, but I appreciate the effort anyway, and certainly there must have been some kernel of truth to SOME of the speculation that was going on at the time. If we are spinning conspiracy theories, I would buy this one, I guess?

If you want to outright dismiss anything I say, at least have the decency to google it first to make sure I'm blowing smoke.

The only thing extremely negative anyone can say about Morey is in regards to Adelman. Other than that, I feel he was dealing with circumstances beyond his control (building around Yao, Tmac contract) He is an amazing GM and people wanting him out are starting to see what he can do with a star.
