In order to entice Super Bowl officials, Reliant Stadium will receive a state-of-the-art renovation.

Two colossal video boards will take the place of the venue’s original screen. The plan would give Reliant the largest boards in professional sports, 52 feet tall and 277 feet wide.

Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation unanimously voted for the upgrade Wednesday.

Blech, this seems a little goofy. Happy for the local engineers but $300 million stadiums shouldn't be getting renovations after eight years.

Most stadiums do... have to keep up with the technology.

MMP got a new video screen after 10 years. Toyota Center got a new one in 8 years.

Hell, the Seattle Sonics left their newly renovated arena in just 12 years.

    We do?

This is a loan being paid back to Mr. McNair, since we do not actually have the money yet.

If we don't get a Superbowl before 2020, I will be disappointed.

Don't forget the Oilers, who left 9 years (?) after renovations to the Dome.

Pretty lame @ the concerted effort to win over suburban daddies and internet posters with another gimmick to make them feel a little more masculine.

    This is live sports.

There is something weird about those dimensions. That aspect ratio implies nothing but a long video banner.

Well, the dome renovations were miniscule compared to what they did in Seattle.

They completely gutted their old arena... forcing the Sonics to play 1-2 years in the Tacoma Dome.

They pretty much rebuilt the whole thing... and it was still not good enough to last more than 12 years. Ridiculous.

It's crazy. The public pays for expensive stadiums so that they can have the opportunity to pay $75 to watch millionaires play a game for billionaires who will lose no sweat over moving the team.

Cowboys board is 72x160 by comparison. So it'll probably be a mixture of video, stats and ads.

The public pays all the costs private industry makes all the profits. Why not use this money to have a rainy day fund for the bonds that city almost defaulted on.

We'll, I imagine it'll be around as wide as the current video board area (ads included) is. I'm sure they'll add height where they can but they might be somewhat limited in what they can do there.

So yeah, the whole thing won't be used for video. They'll do what they can and then throw other stuff up there in the unused portions. It's not going to be like Cowboys Stadium where the whole thing is like one giant TV.

But, by comparison, the Titans have the 2nd largest screens in the NFL at 54' x 157'. The Texans boards at 52' x 277' are only slightly shorter but 120' wider. They could put 2 full videos from different angles at the same time up there and each one would roughly be the size of the Titans video screen.

Sounds nice and they pitch it will be to add to the game day experience, but I still believe it will be filled with ads. How much will actually be for video? They won't ever advertise that because that will be much less than the size of the board. Hopefully I'm wrong.
