If they truly believe the earth is only 10,000 years old that won't sway their beliefs. This is just general ignorance of basic science, something I have disagreements on all the time with my fellow Christians.
There are plenty of folks that have been indoctrinated with religious or mythical beliefs and have managed to shake them off once they realize that their beliefs contradict reality. I think we can agree that for the most part, humans would want to believe more true things than not
I was not referring to things NOT mentioned in the bible. Just for reference: Isaiah 45:18 For thus says the Lord, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it, Who did not create it 5in vain, Who formed it to be linhabited: “I am the Lord, and there is no other. Do you feel that this statement means that there are no extraterrestrial life ? Have you considered the other possibility that they don't believe in a supreme being?
"Who formed it to be inhabited" I interpret it as the Earth was created specifically to be inhabited. Life on other planets contradict this claim
I disagree. God made man in his image, and gave the earth to man. that doesn't mean that he didn't make other planets for other beings.
Really? That's how you read that? The Earth was formed to be inhabited....it says nothing about other planets or that Earth exclusively was formed to be inhabited. Nothing at all. It's entirely possible that the Creator of the universe made all sorts of different planets to be inhabited and that would have no effect on the verse you quoted...which was originally written in Hebrew and we're discussing the English translation of.
not necessarily friend. It does not says God didn't create any other planets to be inhabited..it only addresses this planet in particular since its pertinent to us.
So what would be the purpose of god creating beings outside of earth? You can disagree but anyone can search google and find Christian websites who says that there are no room for extraterrestrial life (according to the bible)
Forming the Earth to be inhabited doesn't exclude other planets from also being formed to be inhabited. I'm not sure where you get that. Do you have anything else besides one cherry-picked and misunderstood quote from a passage talking about something completely different that would seem to contradict the existence of extra-terrestrial life?
It says there is no other Lord, not people. I am aware that Humanists don't believe in a supreme being..thats why I was surprised that Roddenberry allowed the idea of aliens worshipping Jesus to be in his show. I just thought it posed an interesting "what if" in regards to finding other intelligent beings and then realizing they believe in the same God as many here on Earth.
I don't think life in outer space would affect other religions (at least that I'm aware of). I think Christianity would have a problem if there were intelligent. human-like life on other planets. How do you convince them that their God loved them so much, he only send his begotten son to Earth? How do you say that you promote love and equality when you say God plays favorites (by saving humans, and not intelligent aliens).
Thats a good question. Its the same as "what is Gods purpose for creating us on Earth?" thats fine - I would disagree with those websites. You can probably find websites that have the opposite view too. Different Religions/sects/people have different interpretations of the Bible and I would argue that probably no 1 person interprets it "correctly".
It could definitely cause some trouble in trying to convert the aliens, but I don't see how it'd cause trouble for human Christians. The idea that only believers are saved hasn't stopped the religion's growth up to now. I do think discovering other sentient life would spur some rapid development of theology around God's relation to them, and we'd probably ending up fighting each other over whether or not aliens have souls.
If we discovered, or more importantly were discovered by, other sentient life that looked and behaved different than humans but are much more advanced than we are I think that would raise some big questions whether we were made in God's image.
I remember that episode and it was about space Romans where the Roman empire had survived to a level 1960's technology (TV, cars, woman with beehive haircuts). The point of that wasn't about the worship of Jesus but about the decadence of the polytheistic Roman empire and the rebels were quasi Christians. Actually I am guessing is that the Star Trek producers got a chance to use some old props from a sword and sandals movie and needed a story to work with those props. The recent Battlestar Galactica and it's sequel Caprica, plots deal heavily with the question of monotheistic religion versus polytheistic. There are are many stories that tie into questions of resurrection, Messiahs, revalation, the existence of a soul and angels.
I get what your saying about the point of the show. However, the end still brings to mind the question to many viewers.."what if we did find another planet whose intelligent lifeforms worship the same God many here on Earth worship" Its simply an intriguing question. Their special effects budget per episode was $100...so yeah your probably right.
