i dont listen to much music these days but whenever I do turn on the radio, it's always the same Rhianna, Katy Perry, Kesha, Bieber, Maroon 5 combo. Had a bout of insomnia tonight and been finding great songs like Papercut Chronicles 2 by Gym Class Heroes w/ Ryan Tedder and Triple Threat by Anilyst amongst others. Why are songs like these never played on the radio? Do people really wanna hear Rhianna 50,000 times a day?
I'm assuming you are referring to FM radio, which is pretty terrible. I actually have XM radio in my car with much more channels and genres of music, keeping me pretty satisfied.
Internet fragmented the music, and the listening experience. People don't need "terrestrial" radio. Think of it as - Just making up numbers - Back then you're around the radio 3 hours a day. Now people are only around radio 1 hour a day. Radio stations can COMPACT the playlist. How are you gonna know if a station keeps repeating the songs if you're not even around it? Radio stations can't afford to be exploratory, they have to go with what's bankable. They'll glady cater their playlists towards younger people with less discerning ears and undeveloped taste for music, who still have money to spend.
I mean yeah I get that, but its just like the same frigging songs every damn time. I think radio seriously killed my enjoyment of music. I used to listen to hours of music everyday, a lot of which I got from listening to radio. Nowadays, if I have to hear Usher scream one more time about the air tonight or Kesha singing about being drunk or at a club or being drunk at a club...
i hear ya, same crap music, different day. i just use my phone, get a aux cord for your car + ipod/iphone, there ya go. or listen to other stations, other than pop/rap/hip-hop. i listen to country now, new songs every time.
I agree. Normal radio sucks now. With the exception of 88.7, 90.9, and 91.7, (along with the HD Radio counterparts) I never listen to FM. It's all satellite for me. Do you have access to the internet when you usually listen to FM radio? I assume this is in a car while driving or using a portable radio/laptop at work. If R&B and rap are your genres, you will find better artists online.
I have XM in the family car, and I'm usually on backspin or nfl radio during the rare times that I do drive the car. I mainly drive my honda most of the time because it's the one for work and that one does not have XM in it. Honestly, even if it did I don't know what station has good "new" music. I'm not a "oh popular songs suck" guy, I just don't like hearing the same song over and over again. I'm thinking of investing in an ipod and buying some stuff off itunes to get myself back into the music listener mode. I forgot how much good music can put you into a different place.
I've been trying to figure out how the Radio station works. I wanna try to open up a station but put undergroud music, old school, and stuff like that (Its just a thought) - al green, marvin gaye etc... I don't understand how people like the songs they listen to. There are like 5 songs by Lil wayne alone. smh
Radio stations (and the music industry in general) is targeted towards teenage girls. Apparently they're the most profitable demographic. The good news is that in this day and age there are about a billion other (and better) ways to consume music than FM radio.
Probably because you aren't listening to the right stations. Public-sponsored radio is the way to go.
Have not listened to more than 10 mins of FM radio since getting SiriusXM back in 2008. Some of the smartest money I spend each year.
This ain't no lie. When I have tried FM while in the shower about the only English speaking channel I can find is 107.9 or whatever the classic rock radio station is. Thankfully I have Sirius, an iPod, I ♥ Radio, Last.FM, etc. The last two I just use the wi-fi in my car to connect to the phone and done. I couldn't imagine having to go back to terrestrial radio ever again.
