They are both amazing players... But wyatt is a once in a generation type of player i believe... dude has all the right tools and most importantly a high motor kid. I am glad we have Watt and i am sure 49ers are glad they have Aldon as well.
Watt and it isn't even close. Smith is a great pass rusher, but that is all he does. Watt is a one man wrecking machine. He does everything.
Watt is currently tied for league lead in Sacks (19.5) Watt is currently alone in the lead for Stuffs (18) Watt is currently alone in the lead for Yards Lost in Stuffs (45) Watt is the only non-DB anywhere in the top for PD (15) Aldon Smith Stuffs? 2 Von Miller's the only other guy combining sacks with stuffs (16, 12). Watt also has more tackles than either Smith or Miller (70 vs 58, 60). Record or no, there's virtually no way someone could reward Smith with DPOY over Watt without being a Bay Area beat writer.
NFL MVP voters = Heisman Trophy voters JJ Watt has been just as important to the Texans this year as Brady and Manning to their respective teams. But Watt doesn't play the most important position in pro sports, therefore his individual success is already minimized.
If Watt wins MVP doesn't he have to be named the DPOY? Can't win best player in the league and not be the best player on your side of the ball.
Of course it's Watt. I'm a little surprised so many automatically say that Smith is a better pass rusher. It is difficult to compare them because they play very different positions and roles, but Watt is just as effective a pass rusher, imo. And, as good as Smith is at getting sacks, I can't help but think that the 5.5 sack game was such an anomaly that it's hard for me not to give the nod to JJ.
Ha, I was just thinking something similar with kevC's statement "If J.J. Watt doesn't win MVP..." (re:Heisman). “If a guy like Manti isn’t going to win the Heisman they should just make it an offensive award and just give it to the offensive player every year and cut to the chase.” - Brian Kelly “If a guy like J.J. isn’t going to win the MVP they should just make it an offensive award and just give it to the offensive player every year and cut to the chase.” 26 years since the last defensive player won the MVP(Lawrence Taylor). Only two defensive players ever have taken home the honors. (Alan Page, 1971; Lawrence Taylor, 1986)
Lots of stat talk in this. Eyeball test also leads to Watt. Smith, a great, great player who anyone would love to have gets to play with one of the most talented defensive teams I've seen in my life. Smith might not even be the best linebacker on the team man (in before the 3-4 semantics, Miller is a multidimensional 3-4 end playing in a 4-3 anyways, positions are slowly becoming more undefined on the 2nd level) and the crazy part is... Willis might not even be the best linebacker on the team either.
The Pats scheme so well...... they did a better job of containing Watt than anyone in over a year, then yesterday Aldon Smith was not a factor.
It's more Brady than the scheme. Watt pretty much abused the right side of the New England line. Brady just releases the ball so quickly that it's tough to get the conventional stats. http://deadspin.com/5967562/the-patriots-did-not-shut-down-jj-watt-last-night I'd actually argue that the Houston defense didn't play that poorly in New England, and Watt's play was a big reason. Yes, they had the 21 quick points... but seven came courtesy of a complete garbage 30+ yard penalty (DPI on Manning). Otherwise, the Texans kept the Patriots in check, forced a handful of very short series and gave the offense every opportunity to climb back into the game in quarters two and three. (I know we're getting slightly off-topic here, but just pointing out...)
Did you notice that this exact same play was not whistled against the Niners last night? It is amazing what happens when you don't have the benefit of a BS call to extend your drive.
Yup, I even tweeted about it. Same exact play. Though what was funny - Brady threw a hissy fit and ended up getting a similarly sketchy (albeit a different play) DPI call in his favor two plays later.
Did you miss this? The only thing worse than your ridiculous player "analysis", is that you try and pass yourself off as a reputable poster, when in reality you are anything but. As long as you continue with your schtick of slighting the Texans, I will continue referencing your brilliant JJ Watt "analysis" so that posters can be reminded of what a half-brained nit-wit that you are.
Scheme and Brady are the same to me, the point is to make very quick reads and get rid of the ball ASAP. So I agree with you. The best way to counter act that is to avoid penalties and score on turnovers. If the Texans do that, they can win.
Agree. How Bowman was not a first round talent is beyond me. Bowman and Willis are both better LBs than Smith. Regardless I don't think its crazy to say that the 9ers have the best LB core in the history of the NFL!
Watching the game last night it was obvious that Aldon Smith seems to impact a defense only through sacks. He was double teamed and was a virtual non factor. While JJ even if he doesn't get sacks he stuffs runs and gets a lot more qb hits. Watt is by far the DPOY and it's not even close. What kind of a DE gets more than 15+ defended passes. Thats crazy man.
