He was benched for the ten-fifteen something bad games beforehand. Not for that game alone. Toney Douglas like it or not has earned his time in the fourth quarter. Jeremy Lin will have a chance to win that back, but not unless he grows some balls and stops deferring to Harden all game long.
Confidence is not something given to a player by coaches like a lolly pop after a doctors visit. If a player needs a coach to build up their confidence then they should just retire. It's is NOT high school. I think you confuse the Rockets for a garbage team like the Wizards who will play their rookies no matter what. Even at the cost of winning games. We don't do that **** here and as a fan I'm proud of that.
Since you probably never played on a BBall team, many players are rythm shooters and being pulled out of a game really affects your confidence. This is true for the majority of the player imo. Why? Cuz we aren't robots. Check this quote out by Lin's replacement in NY. It sums up perfectly how coaching does affect players. Now look at Felton and how well he's playing. “I know I’m struggling, but it’s hard to perform the way you know how when you know they don’t have confidence in you,” Felton said. “Never in my days playing basketball, have I felt like a coach wasn’t confident in my abilities. It’s hard to play knowing that. Coming in and out of games is throwing my rhythm off, but it’s something that I’ll get through.” “Tonight was one of those nights where it was hard to get into the game knowing every mistake I made would be magnified,” Felton said. “It’s to the point where the only person I could turn to was my mom.”
I don't get why you LOFs are b****ing so much. Lin does well? Keep him in. He doesn't do well? Bench him and put in Douglas. It's the NBA not elementary school. You don't keep playing a player even though he's sucking, not if you want to win.
What's your response? Keep him in even though he goes 0pt/0ast 3 TO in 10 minutes? Okay there buddy, take his dick out of your mouth.
Most young players pay their dues as reserves and "develop" in that capacity before being entrusted with a starting position. Maybe that's what Lin needs. If he's not able to get into a rhythm with the starting group, maybe playing with the second unit will do him some good. His overall minutes will go down, but he'll have more opportunities to be a playmaker.
You just quoted one of the more toxic and lazy players in the NBA as evidence that players need to play through slumps? For one Lin isn't playing through a slump because he just flat out isnt playing well. Felton has been known for being a loud mouth tool. Look what he did in Portland.
He's doing well this year...and for most of his career he has been above average. Anyway, my point was not WHO the quote was from. It's the content of the quote itself. The majority of bball players can identify with his statements. I've been in those shoes in b4 as well as many players I know.
I don't understand why people need to be so butthurt debating Lin. I mean, it's very obvious that the kid will be moved out of town in a year. Whether you are a Lin fan, Lin hater or die hard Rockets fan, just be a little patient and you will be happy and get your wish very soon.
The content of the quote is from a habitual loud mouth who is known for his lazy aproach to basketball and his ability to talk **** about his coaches. If you want to hold Lin to that standard ok. Btw, I have been on a Basketball team and when I suck I don't care if I don't get minutes because what's most important is the team winning
I dont think this is a fair assesment of McHale in regards to benching players vs. allowing them to shoot themselve out of a slump. Plus Ray Felton's interviews shouldn't be our measurement for player confidence vs. success in the NBA. You are talking about the guy who almost ate himself out of the league last year. -A Relative case in point... 2011/12 Chase Budinger. Budinger had earned the respect of McHale/coaches in practice, scouting, and his previous years as a knock down shooter that kept him in the rotation all last year despite his shooting woes early in the season. Despite Chase's struggles last season, and his admittingly difficulty adjusting to a new system, he still was relied on by the coaches to play a large role on the team coming off the bench. The coaches had to change the role to something he was more comfortable with, but they never gave up on him. -With Lin, the confidence thing is 100% on Jeremy. No professional coach on this planet will encourage a player to hesitate on their shot, and encourage them to be passive. You have to play within your own game comfortably, but aggressively to be affective. Its only up to the coaches to put that player in a position to be comfortable within their own game. So are you arguing that Lin is not playing a comfortable role within the team? Do you think he is not comfortable being a starting PG in the NBA playing off of a star player? Do you think he needs a new role on the team? That is debatable. Look... to all the LOF'ers out there. Either Lin is going to be a ball dominant guard on a really, really bad team, or he's going to need to learn to play off of a great star player in this league to be on a team that actually has a chance to win games. So if you A. want Jeremy to be successful as an individual player, and B. Want him to be on a winning team then he really needs to work it out with the Houston Rockets, and Harden. He wont find a better, MORE PATIENT coaching/front office situation to do so then in Houston. Any other team that has a star player wants to win a title here and now, and he would have already been demoted to a bench role. The Rockets are more long term here, and are sticking with Jeremy. What good teams wouldn't have already sent Jeremy to the bench? So just understand that its in your best interest to be patient and hope that he can work it out in Houston. Unless you dont give a crap, and just want him to put up big stats on a bad team without another star.
lol...dats cool. what position did u play? were u a starter? for me playing at da 1 and sometimes 2 as a starter, it bothered me a lot especially when i was rollin and the game was tight. my biggest problem being subbed out was just in those situations. when i was playin poorly, i could deal with it cuz as you said the W is more impt.
Im just trying to recall in 25 of my 30 years of playing organized basketball if I ever remembered a player that ever went over and thanked their coach for pulling them out of a basketball game ever.
I agree with some of your points. Let me clarify my point. What I disagree with is when Mchale benches Lin when he is doing well. That's where the problem is. If he's playing poorly then go with TD. But if he's playing well, keep him in. Taking him out just because he MIGHT be a defensive liability in close games speaks volumes to a player and affects him. There is just no way it wouldn't. He's done that a few times already. That is what the LOFs are complaining about and I agree 100%. It's not about being a LOF, it's about smart coaching decisions.
