Yao was like that too at the beginning. Give him time.

This is nice to hear. I am perhaps too harsh on Asik, but it's very frustrating to see him fumble simple passes.

He sets tremendous screens. He's an elite defender in the low post, and an elite rebounder. The offense we've been getting from him is a real surprise. I'm shocked at this kind of reaction to Omer's play in his first season as a starter getting serious minutes. Before we got him, we had endless posts here bemoaning the lack of a real 5, post-Yao. Well, we've got a real center, and a damned good one. Some folks will b**** about anything.

Asik was definitely brought in for the defense but with plans to improve his offensive game considering he's a starter.

It's obvious Asik is not confident and does not have the skill yet. Give him a season or two and he'll slowly get there. He can't get up as high as Tyson Chandler but he's got enough to learn how to catch and dunk.

Tom Thibodeau seems to disagree with your assesment:

"That's a part of his game that gets overlooked a lot," Thibodeau said. "He's not a good screener. He's a great screener. When you come off Omer, you're open, whether it's catch-and-shoot or pick-and-roll.

"He's a big-time multiple effort guy. Often he will set a pick-and-roll and then fly back out if there's nothing there to set another one. He keeps going. He adds a lot to our offense."

I'm sure Thibodeau doesn't know a thing about defense or offense. Why should we pay attention to his opinion about Asik?

It would seem to me that people here are incredibly impatient. It's like Asik, Harden, and Lin sign big contracts and so therefore if they don't bring us to the promise land, then they are complete flops that needs to be traded, bench, and generally shamed upon.

It's been said before, but really let it sink in: We have a really, really young team.

    BUT

We have tons of bright spots. Harden of course is the shiniest of the stars. Both Asik and Lin are very promising players. All three have flaws, but all essentially have been asked to take on much bigger roles than in the previous years.

For those down on Asik right now. Please take a look at the defensive RAPM (Regularized Adjusted Plus-Minus). I wish people would start using this stat more, it's an incredibly good predictor of future performance when you have a sample size of 3+ years. Even with much smaller sample sizes, the numbers pass most of my eye tests. So far in this young season of 20+ games, Asik is the 6th best defender in the NBA.

    Here's #1-10 Defensive RAPM (2000+ minutes):
    Kevin Garnett 5.9
    Tim Duncan 4.8
    Marc Gasol 4.8
    Dwight Howard 4.8
    Josh Smith 4.3
    Omer Asik 3.9
    Tyson Chandler 3.6
    Joakim Noah 3.5
    Andre Iguodala 3.4
    DeAndre Jordan 3.1

Asik's number were much higher at the beginning of the year. In general, Asik is pretty much kicking butt on defense. He is an offensive liability, however, his defense more than makes up for his lack of offense. I'm also of the opinion that offense is much easier to teach than defense.

Also, any LOF or LOH that makes this thread a Lin flame war thread will get added to my ignore list because WOW...can one thread just be about Asik?

I'd try a more positive view of the world. If I want to taste something sweat, I'd go with apple, not lemon. If I like something sour, I go with lemon, not apple. If I want something both sour and sweat, I would go with orange. Or when I want it be filling too, I'd pay a little more and get sweet and sour chicken.

You get what you play for.

Excuses number 123 of why Lin is nonperforming

    Omer Asik

Reminder non of Lin's shortcomings is his fault, it's the coach's racism, coach's bias, Center can't set picks, Harden is a hog, Toney Douglas, his knee, his confidence being shattered by LOH on clutchfans

This shouldn't be a surprise. Lin fans have been pissed for a while now that Asik can't catch and finish like Chandler, hence diminishing Lin's assist numbers. I mean, there was even a thread that wanted Greg Smith starting simply because he can finish.

If you watch games from just the perspective of Lin, Asik is a liability.

Give the OP a break. He's learned a lot since he started watching hoops last February.

Funny how the agenda driven posters started immediately talking about Lin in a thread that has nothing to do with him.

Well, if one only watches the player, and not the team, expect to be disappointed. Why? Because any single player is only a part of the team picture. Sadly, that's not obvious to a lot of people here.

The Roxx need the young version of Amare. Amare is a beast when healthy.
