Can't go wrong with either guy. As a pure pass rusher, Aldon Smith is clearly better, but Watt makes a LOT more plays in the run game. Watt is more well-rounded and impactful. Aldon Smith has Justin Smith playing next to him and Patrick Willis & NaVorro Bowman behind him. Those guys make a lot of plays for the 49ers defense. Watt carries the Texans defense on his shoulders. I definitely take Watt.
Agree. Aldon may be a better pash rusher, but Watt's all around game shows who the better player is. If Watt breaks the record, he gets a co-MVP nod with Brady or Manning.
Aldon Smith plays a position where he's supposed to get sacks. JJ Watt plays a position (3-4 DE) where sacks are not expected... the fact that he's threatening to break the sack record playing from that position makes his performance even more impressive.
This...plus the fact that JJ has done so much more defensively...batted balls, tackles behind the LOS, tips leading to INTs...JJ hands down is the Defensive MVP...too bad he wont be able to get the MVP this year...b/c of how well Tom Brady....um never mind...he is getting abused by a real NFC title contender... So far, what has been clear is that the NFC has higher caliber talent than what the AFC has shown this year...and if NE is clearly the best team from the AFC...what does that even mean for the rest of the AFC...
Aldon Smith isn't great against the run, he benefits from Justin Smith getting double teamed. He's an elite, and prob the best pure pass rusher in the NFL, but JJ Watt is elite in all categories of a DLineman. He can rush the passer, stuff the run, great in pursuit, probably the best lineman ever at reading and batting down balls at the line of scrimmage. I foresee Aldon Smith shattering the sack record in the near future, possibly approaching 30, and will win DPOY, but this year belongs to Watt. Not only is he also approaching the current sack record, he is second in the league in batted balls, surrounded by DBs in that category, that's just unreal. But imagine Smith and Watt next to each other a man can dream, can't he?
You must not watch professional football if you think that a one trick pony such as Aldon Smith is even near what JJ is in terms of DPOY. This is par for the course for you, though. Either you are the biggest joke of a texans fan or a huge troll, but this place would be better if you just went away. You are ****. Is that mature enough?
Smith and Watt tied in Sacks after tonight. Watt is far and away better in the other categories though.
1. I said, if Smith breaks the record, he will get it. Sports writers/media will gravitate towards sack number 23. 2. If Smith doesn't break the record, it will go to Watt. Much deserved too ( I believe Watt should win it). 3. What was wrong with any of the above? 4. How does it make you so mad that hurl insults on the internet? 5. If it bothers you so much , why not just ignore my posts? Wouldn't that cause less frustration and stress?
if the voting is close (which it shouldn't be) it'll be akin to the year Randy Johnson barely beat out Mike Hampton for the Cy Young award in MLB. Johnson led the league in just about EVERY major statistical category that it should have been a landslide.
Forget DPOY. Watt is starting to enter the MVP conversation. 33 TFLs (2nd best is 25) 15 Pass Def (2nd best non-DB is 9) 19.5 Sacks 3 FF (2 FR) That's 70 negative plays on the season. It normally takes good players 2 years to get that many, and the year isn't even over yet!
you should have added the post where he said Watt still has to prove it in the playoffs...when in fact, Watt just did last year.
Let's put it this way: if J.J. Watt does not win the MVP this year, that just means the MVP award will NEVER be won by a defensive player. He's having the greatest defensive season ever on a team that will most likely be at least a 13 win team.
Absolutely. Might as well rename it "offensive player of the year". Which, IMO, is the right thing to do. Defense and offense need their own individual set of awards, as they're two difficult to weigh against each other.
