Challenge : Name a starting center who is worse than Asik at the pick and roll. Asik can neither catch nor finish so think a little before you answer.

Omer is a bust. He can score 20 when Lin is running the offense but we're in Harden isotown.

I don't blame him since he really is supposed to be a backup center.
But Morey made him to wear a pair of mismatched shoes.

While Asik is not a good passing target after the pick N roll, he is an elite screener, which is the most important part of the pick N roll to begin with. To demonstrate that this thread is just silly hyperbole, here's a list of NBA starting centers who are all far, far worse than Omer Asik at the pick N roll:

    DeAndre Jordan
    Bismack Biyombo
    Kosta Koufos
    Chris Kaman
    Larry Sanders
    Lavoy Allen / Spencer Hawes
    Jonas Valanciunas

Anyhow, I do think Asik's troubles at finishing deserves a thread of its own. It's the reason I've even gone as far as considering whether Greg Smith might deserve to start at some point.

My 2 cents: I think it's mental with Asik. He doesn't have the greatest explosion, but, like Yao, when you have a size advantage over most of your counterparts, a little patience and cool-headedness can get the ball in the hoop at an acceptable rate.

Such a shame, too, since Omer Asik was signed specifically for his scoring ability. Man, what will an offense that scores more points at home than any other team in the NBA save OKC and the Knicks ever do without 20 PPG from Omer Asik? :(

In which world is Asik an elite screener? All of the guys on that list finish better than Asik at the rim. Lavoy Allen and Larry Sanders lol ? Ok maybe Asik is on their level.

Nah he was signed to make us a better defensive team. We are one of the worst defenses in the league as well.

Still sets the best picks in the league. Keep crying though, Asik isn't here to score points.

LOFs just throwing everybody under the bus now huh? McHale's benching Lin. Morey couldn't fit Lin with good teammates. Harden's taking the ball from Lin. Patterson can set Lin good picks. Now Omer, too?

No, he's not. He's good at setting the screen, just not so good at finishing, but he makes up for it somewhat with offensive rebounds.

His rebounding and defense make him a very valuable player regardless... we just need a PF who can finish at the rim like a beast and hit the open mid range pop.

And so in just one followup post, we learn that the OP has no idea what he's talking about.

he had 0 expectations for offense when he came here...was brought in for defense, and he's lived up to the hype

if anything, his offensive skills have been somewhat of a surprise and gives hope of what could be to come. no doubt he is not that great of a finisher, but from the flashes i've seen, i'm hopeful.

Today's Asik is a big step up from the Asik 20 games ago. I'm happy as long as he continues to improve. We're rebuilding, remember?

in which world do you understand what a great screener is? because asik is one of best in the league at setting screens if not the best... his biggest problem is catching, and finishing... so there is three phases in being an effective PnR Big and hes elite at one... if he ever developes soft hands or learns to finish better, watch out!!!

BRB, making a non-stupid thread asking ClutchFans if there is a better screener in the NBA than Omer Asik, besides Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins.

Lol I think you need to understand sarcasm. But his point is true, we didn't bring Asik in to score 20+ points for us. And yes he is a good screener, even though he can't finish well at the rim.
