This is an intensely ironic statement from a pro-gun advocate. I can't think of anything more concrete of a statement of fear selling than a gun being sold as something one must have to protect one's family. Crime has continued to decrease, but it looks like fear will always sell.
Being cautious and being fearful are two different things. I don't have fear when I walk to my car in the middle of the night, but I am cautious how I do it. It's called using your brain. I also ENJOY shooting guns.
Oh, so people reading and researching about a massacre of elementary school children in the media are letting their plump little brains go hyper-sensitive, and you're being the cautious one by trying to stifle debate at this issue, and letting your logical reasoning guide you to a "safer and funner" outcome? http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199310073291506 Besides, enough of this media red herring crap. Mass shootings peaked in 1929, decades before the 24/7 news media cycle, and before there were at least some reasonable restrictions on guns in America.
