I saw the same... but even then, if his mom was a teacher there, they would have let him in without issue.

You are mistaking trying to understand with remorse. If this guy was severely mentally ill such as a paranoid schizophrenic, I don't think anyone would be feeling sorry for him but it would help in understanding what caused this so that things like this could be potentially avoided.

It's pretty obvious that he had mental issues... no sane person would do something like this, duh.

There's so many conflicting reports and retractions in real time. Seems almost pointless to keep up with what's going on right now.

the sad part is there's not a whole lot you can do to prevent this. what are we going to do? make schools into prisons?

That'd keep him from getting a gun.

But see, it cant be avoided.... Suicide can be avoided, there are signs of abuse and depression. Broken homes, broken hearts and addictions that cause people to no longer want to live... But there are signs... They cry out for help... They post depressing songs on fb, youtube.... They are always down and out... Killers stay hush most of the time unless they are trying to do it with a group of people.... Killers stay hush because they want to pull this off, they dont want help they want to make history.... Lets jus stop calling killers mentally ill... Because that is an excuse for anything wrong anyone does... He raped a girl and killed her (mentally ill), He killed children in a school (mentally ill), he robbed a bank (mentally ill)...... Man everyone to ever do something wrong could use that excuse.... Does mental illness have a cure? If it does than wow.... Its an even better excuse to get away with things...

This is very true. The Unabomber comes to mind. In fact, any act of political or religious terror would be included as well. So, if this was done for political reasons, then what I said is completely not applicable -- if this is what you meant by motives, then I apologize for misunderstanding you, and I completely agree.

However, if he is like the person in Colorado, or the man in Sweden (I think it was), the Columbine kids, or many other unstable spree killers we have seen -- then I think it is a person who would have been helped and probably identified by widespread preventive mental health care.

If this is the case, whoever let him in must feel terrible now.

This is a very valid concern. Reminds me of the unwritten rule about showing fans running onto the field during a ballgame. Don't rubberneck and encourage or enable this kind of behavior.

Don't put that on them. You're, maybe subconsciously, assigning blame. This...I don't even know what to call him...was going to carry this out, period. Do you think checking his id would have prevented anything?

Man, I really cringed when I read your post. Man. But listen, I am going to really set aside your tone and focus on some points you made, because it is a serious conversation to have in the aftermath of a terrible event.

You don't have to be "crazy" to be assisted by mental health access and therapy. You might just have personal and domestic issues that have gotten out of hand and you are not equipped to deal with the suffering so you start fantasizing about making other people suffer too...and then you do it. So no, he may not have had clinical issues, but he definitely was dealing with some troubling thoughts before doing this act. Thoughts that, if he would have had a chance to talk to a therapist, may not have turned into actions. Thoughts that might have been noticed by a professional assessing him who could have done something.

And I am not coming after the "crazy", hell, I am the "crazy". And I am not excusing these acts. Anyone doing something like this should be executed, insanity plee or no. What I am saying is that we as a society have the resources to create a situation where people will not end up in a state of mind to where they will do this kind of thing -- at least not as much.

It is sort of like when John Donne said, when the bell tolls, it tolls for thee. The death of these kids is the death of my kids and of yours, and if there is something we can do to address the state of mind capable of doing this then we need to do so.

i guess there were 2 homes all along, not one, which caused the confusion...doesnt seem like the mother made it to work. It's just more sickening, if he went to the school just to shoot the kids.
