I agree, and I also know that many teachers unions have major problems, and create obstacles that shouldn't be there.
Private Union - Bad - but doesn't bother me. Public Union - Very Bad - Should be illegal. If a private union strikes, no one is affected, except for the company. If a public union strikes, everyone is affected. If a private union negotiates a too rich of a deal, only the company goes down. If a public union negotiates a too rich of a deal, everyone pays for it. Private union can't vote for the CEO that returns the favor by giving favorable deals. Public union can vote for the CEO that gives them the best deal in return.
I avoid the D&D at all costs but figured I'd comment since I am a proud member of IBEW Local 716. Thanks for this comment mc mark. I was actually talking to a friend of mine earlier about unions and found out his father in law is a strong union supporter :grin:and his late father was also a proud union member. Not sure why I mentioned all that but I want to say not all unions are bad. Skilled labor isn't cheap, cheap labor isn't skilled.
My own personal experience is that our public union hasn't gone on strike. We have eliminated waste, saved jobs, streamlined the bureaucracy. Advocated for professional standards for the employees, and prevented exploitation of employees. I'd say that which has happened trumps the hypothetical strike and too rich a deal.
I have HUUUUUGE respect for skilled labor, and I have no doubt that in 10-15 years skilled laborers like plumbers, welders, blacksmiths and others will charge more than doctors and lawyers. Our society has created an unfair stigma about skilled labor positions, a stigma that the education system helps perpetuate by trying to tell every kid that "college is the answer." Meanwhile, these kids come out of college $100k in debt making $35k a year. Meanwhile the killed laborer is out of his apprenticeship making $80k a year debt free. I don't belong to a union now, but I did during the late '60's and early '70's, while working for a couple of Houston newspapers. All the news that was unfit to print! I was happy to pay my dues. I made over $20 an hour, with time and a half for more than 8 hours during a shift, part-time, a great gig while going to school. I support unions and think they have been vilified for far too long, while their contributions have been largely ignored.

I don't watch any cable news because it's sole purpose is to turn a profit, not report the news - but thanks... and the vast majority of my news consumption comes from overseas, including Russia Today and Al Jazeera. GASP! No, I live in the state of Texas which is a right to work state. A state that leads the nation in prosperity, the proof is in the pudding as they say.
