Does it suck to root for a football program that is less relevant than Arkansas State?

Fun facts: Arkansas State has more NFL players than Rice, leads to better jobs for coaches than Rice, pays their coaches more than Rice, wins more games than Rice, draws more fans than Rice.

Thanks for the link Major. It's beyond obvious now, it's time for Mack to move onto something else. He is not a head coach any longer, he's just a mascot.

I thought everything was aligned this year - a mediocre record, universal grumbling, a blowout to our rivals, no real excuses, etc. Yet, he survived.

Instead, Belmont announced they are raising season ticket prices, despite the fact that not a single game this last year had a market value ticket price anywhere close to the face value of the tickets. So right now, everyone seems clueless and willing to let the whole thing fall apart.

From what I can tell, prformance is simply measured by $$, and UT is obscenely profitable, so everything is apparently great.

    It is really unfortunate.

As a fan by default, I am getting tired of texting my Alum buddies calling for Mack's head. They are just as bewildered as I am, and at this point are just hoping for more embarrassing losses to speed up the process.

    Not fun.

    Good read.

If I was Applewhite, I'd be taking the next opportunity to leave. Harsin bails and all Mack does is make him the lead co-coordinator? What is the problem with making him the one and only OC? Is he that bad of a coach? Others don't seem to think so. What does Mack have against giving him the job outright?

Good question - that does seem weird. I also have to wonder if Applewhite has been infected by the environment - he grew up in it as a player and has now been coaching in it for several years. I think highly of him, but if they do ever fire Mack, I think they need to consider cleaning house completely and starting over from scratch.

That's an interesting viewpoint. I think there's an element they forgot to mention, however. Expectations. UT-Austin branch truly believes they have vastly superior talent than other schools (even peer schools like A&M, OU, etc). I believe that is inaccurate. There's a few things at play -- not the least of which is how little difference there is between a "good 3 star" recruit, a 4 star and a 5 star recruit. ...and this difference can be completely nullified by quality coaching and player development.

The other factor contributing to misaligned expectations is that since UT-Austin branch has such a large well funded alumni base, and Rivals' objective is to increase subscriptions, so naturally you'll have the longhorn recruits overrated by their service.

So if you have equal talent coming in, and they don't get coached up by the staff, and then on top of that there is a culture problem weighing on the players and coaches, then it's no surprise that you get completely trashed by the Sooners and pretty much any ranked team out there.

This misalignment of expectations for the fans really amplifies their frustration.

As an Aggie, I can't believe I'm saying this but...

    Hang in there Horns fans!

Look at TAMU 1 year ago. We just went thru another mediocre season for the 13th straight year. We were getting ready to change coaches for the 3rd time in that period.

One crazy year later, A&M (aside from Notre Dame) is the talk of the college football world.

For what its worth, I HIGHLY recommend hiring a younger coach from a lesser known school who plays the newer up tempo offense rather than try to get the big name from another school. It certainly helps with recruiting in my opinion. Sumlin certainly did that for TAMU.

    Good luck!

The life of a rice football fan: caring more about everyone else's program than your own.

Seriously brah, the Counseling Center at Rice is a fantastic resource, go check it out. I'm sure they have alumni discounts.

    Serious question...

Did you already graduate from Rice, or are you hoping to go there in 3 years after you graduate from High School?

I would hope that an Owls Alum would have bigger goals in life than continuously casting pebbles at UT.
