I never really had any problems with Apple Maps but I downloaded Google Maps for good measure. It's nice to have both options!
Did they really have to make that YouTurd video that has NO VALUE whatsoever? Anyway, I'm on the theogcasey camp here... never had trouble with Apple Maps... got Google Maps just for the traffic.
Apple maps has given me some screwy directions. If they get it fixed and on par with Google, I'll go back. For now, I'm glad this new app is out.
small town??? What exactly were the screwy directions you got? I'm wondering where, exactly, Apple Maps failed you.
You would think that searching for google maps on the App Store, the google maps app would be the first thing to show up. But no it's the 5th thing. I can't believe apple hasn't fixed this terrible new search engine they installed.
Driving from Austin to Grapevine via Ft. Worth. For some reason, the directions told us to exit the freeway, go into downtown FW, Take 3 rights, and then reenter the freeway. Luckily, I went through the directions before I left and I ignored that part.
I had to go from midtown to South Houston today and I did the turn-by-turn. Is it just me or does the Google girl (I'll call her a girl) sound... oh, I don't know... immature? I would so love to have the Apple iOS iMaps WOMAN (she sounds older and already drunk or like she had a few margaritas) do the Google directions... but that's just me. She sounds mature and... like is dying to have a good time... the Google Maps girl sounds like she's going to the mall to meet her boyfriend after she tells me how to get somewhere.
Briefly looking through the app I couldn't find a way to drop a pin and name it. Instead all it gives me is the address. Am I overlooking something or is it not an option yet?
So I showed the fellas without iOS the new Google Maps app on my iPhone... Someone in the office just said: "That sounds like Siri in her twenties... when she was still partying and had a lot of energy..." LOL! Just press and hold...? If you did that, the point stays there... use it like maps.google.com on the regular PC browser. You can't drop the pin there, either.
So far has not impressed. Google maps told me the destination is on my left, but it was on the other side of the highway. Apple maps worked better in this scenario. Although apple maps had me do the same thing in fort Worth, exit off the highway, only to get back on in a mile.
The double tap + drag gesture to zoom the google map in/out one-handed is very nice. I also like that Google Maps highlights major streets in yellow to make them stand out better, unlike Apple Maps. The overall color scheme of the Google Maps app is better and helps make the maps be easier to read. Apple Maps is far more integrated though which is a strong advantage for it. It's unlikely that Google Maps will ever get anywhere near that level of integration.
Oh, so they finally added voice navigation? It's about time. It's shameful how Google purposefully withheld voice navigation from the previous bundled iphone Maps app. Of course, the reason they did it was so they could drive users who wanted voice navigation to Android. Yet, when Apple finally dumped them, then Google decides its time to allow iphone users voice navigation in the Google maps app. I bet if Apple had not made the move they did, Google never would have added that feature.
