Eh, same sight gave positive turns for SW Episode 1 so I'm not too worried.

So do we know where in the book the first movie ends? It seems like Mirkwood, when they meet the wood elves...?

My guess (from the soundtrack) is
Right after they escape the goblins/wargs and are rescued by the eagles. I think the second movie will be based in Mirkwood, with the third taking place at Erebor.

I thought I'd mention for those in Austin that I just got 3 tickets at the Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter, really good seats in the middle, for The Hobbit on Sunday the 16th, in the early evening, and at the 3D 48fps screen. I'm going with my daughter and my S.O., and it will be my second viewing after seeing it on Friday. I was really surprised that they were available. I don't think people realize yet that they can get reserved seats a week or two (or longer) in advance at that theatre. Did it online a moment ago. Can anyone tell I'm excited? :-D-

Oh, and did any of you watch last night's Colbert? Andy Serkis was on, and they showed a clip from the film that I hadn't seen before. A large chunk of the scene by the underground lake (seemed like a large chunk, anyway!), where Gollum confronts Bilbo. It looked great!

I originally thought that also until I saw this little gem in the Lego store:

I love the upcoming movie, but it should be in two not 3 parts imo

Saw it last night at a special advance screening and pretty good. Not quite as great as the LOTR movies but still very good. I didn't know ahead of time that it was is going to be three parts so the ending of this part surprised me.

My only complaint is that it does move a bit slowly at times to refer to events in LOTR and it seems like to stretch out the story in the book into three epic movies.

This is very much a movie for the Tolkien nerds as Radagast the Brown is an important character in this version.

Your guess is correct. Although from what I heard the third is going to involve events that happen after the end of the Hobbit regarding the Necromancer at Dol Guldor.

Peter Jackson has made his money already and now wants to make a great Tolkien adaptation. I have read that the movie is paragraph for paragraph sometimes with the book. This is great for anyone who appreciates Tolkien's book. Forget the casual movie goer, I could care less.

I read the Hobbit more than 20 years ago but just started to reread it last night. From what I remember though Peter Jackson does change / add quite a bit to it. The book itself isn't that long and was written before Lord of the Rings so Jackson has reworked it some to tie in closer to LOTR, particularly the movies.

Ah I'm a little let down by this. :(

When I started this thread and saw that they were making more than one movie, I was skeptical that it could match or surpass LOTR. Apparently this movie follows the mood of the book by being silly and lighthearted versus the dark, epic, and somber tone that pervades LOTR.

Hollywood loves to squeeze as much as juice as they can from a franchise even if it hurts the movie i.e. Indiana Jones 4, Jaws, Star Wars, etc. To use an expression from LOTR, "butter being scrapped over too much bread." I still have faith that PJ can make a quality Tolkien movie even with splitting one book into multiple parts and making up his own material. By this weekend, I'll know if that faith was misplaced.

I am so old. My son said his Hobbit ticket cost him $18...for a movie (3D)!?! I think the last movie I paid for was $7 and it wasn't a matinee. I had a friend that took his kids to a 3D movie, popcorn and cokes recently...$88. wth.

Will the Hobbit movie be more light hearted than LOR? The main Charecters from the Hobbit previews don't seem as edgy as the main Charecters from LOR.

The Hobbit was written before WWII and is lighter overall. There are also more dwarves then in LOTR.

LOTR was written after WWII and Tolkien drew a lot of his writing from the experiences he had during the war.

I read on r/TIL, that Tolkien based the dwarves on Jews.
