Guns are like cars. They make us feel better about ourselves

Exactly. Crime has continued to decrease, but people are hyper-sensitive because news is commercial and instant, and of course fear sells. Watch the news, they don't cover breakthroughs in science, technologies and humanities to inspire future generations. They focus on murders, kidnappings, war and other violent crimes that capture people's attention. Hell, Nancy Grace makes a living off of it.

The consumer is the problem. If people didn't watch it, "news" organizations would cover it.

Guns don't make me feel better about myself. They allow me to know that I can defend myself against anyone who means me or my loved ones harm... which increasingly isn't just criminals.

I never said what you're implying, but the title is misleading. He could have wrote, "Shooting in Oregan mall - 2 killed, 1 injured". The title is sensationalism and it makes the reader expect something worse than it is. The video posted on the last page has some good points. Sensationalism draws viewers, but the media needs to stop the way they report these shootings if they care about society.

So just because someone lives in a poor area their life isn't as valuable as someone who is shopping at a mall? Sounds racist and just wrong.

wow....noone can even figure this idiot out. why did he do what he did? had none of the problems of your typical mass shooting criminal. read he boasted about an inheritance and moving to Hawaii. wonder if that was all bs knowing he would do this instead? sounds like a real wimp who threw his life away. at least he sucked at it and there weren't more victims. probably the "comedian" who sucked at everything he did in life...even making gyros.

Google "Police State" and "Paramilitary Police Raids." I'm not a conspiracy theorist or criminal, I don't sell drugs and I have no fear of escalated police tactics on myself... but you never know. The best option we have to keep the government in line is to arm ourselves, if we become passive they'll take all they can.

Is it still media sensationalism? Or is it just a country gone mad?

The entire reason the 2nd amendment is there is to protect the people from the government.

That's not the implication and you know it. The fact that violence and crime is at a high rate in poor neighborhoods is a fact of reality everywhere in the world. Acknowledging that reality is not "racist" - what is racist is the assumption that "ghetto" = "black neighborhood", which you have inferred but you can clearly see I never made.

The fact is that what everyone typically assumes to be a "safe" place - church, elementary school, shopping mall, movie theater - that assumption is now being erased, and there is something awful about such a situation. I come from a country that has this same problem due to terrorism, but regardless of the root cause, the end result is the same: a populace that lives in daily needless fear. And it is even more unconscionable for a country to realize this and wilfully refuse to solve the problem.

His mother died at the time of his birth, and he had never met his father. He wanted to commit suicide, and for some it's so hard they have to force their hand and commit acts of terror.

If you believe the shooting would have happened regardless of the sensationalism created by the media from the prior shootings then you don't understand it or you choose to blame something else. My guess is he was prescribed to a Schedule II controlled prescription drug such as adderall like most of the other shooters. When these things happen we should know the shooter's medical history, but it looks like this shooting will be forgotten quickly in light of recent events. I believe the problem is how much prescription drugs we are feeding our kids today, and ourselves.

This story is not getting much attention. Somehow I am not surprised.

Reminds me of the story of the CHL carrier that helped subdue the Gabriel Giffords shooter that no one heard about.

So why not buy a taser? And most gun control advocates do not advocate banning guns entirely. Do you honestly need a assault rifle with a 30 round magazine to defend yourself. What other reason do people buy assault rifles other than thinking its cool or for recreational purposes. Its definitely not for self defense.

Assault rifles aren't the problem, why are you fixated on them? 4% of all gun related homicides are by rifle, and the majority of those are HUNTING rifles. Hunting rifles like the .30-06 are FAR more deadly than a .223 AR-15 as used by this gunman.

A taser? Really? Do you know how guns work? Do you know how tasers work? Tasers are a one-shot system with 10-15 feet of range. Seriously.
