anyone here enjoy foie gras? i tried it yesterday finally after hearing about it for a while. not sure if the ones i tried were from duck or goose. but i thought it was nasty and fat as heck. don't know how anyone can actually enjoy it. then again, i had it in an expensive buffet. maybe there are better way of making it...
You're doing it wrong. Fois gras is really, really good when prepared well and of high quality. My favorite is on a steak. It just melts goodness all over.
Yeah, what was the price of the Buffet? Foie Gras as an appetizer for one can easily be $16. If you went to an "expensive" buffet that was say $30, there is no way that was good Foie Gras. It would be like expecting the caviar at a $30 buffet to be orgasmic, but instead found it to be just overly-salty fish eggs.
i didn't have pay the whole bill, but i think it was listed as $50 to $70 per person range. had unlimited sushi/sashimi, steak, oyster, abalone, and tons of other goodies. certainly the best so far.
I tried it at a fancy restaurant at an all-inclusive resort (probably not the best place to try it), and did not like it. It tasted like sweet butter to me. Maybe I'd like it on a steak, though? I also tried sweet breads. Thought they were good.
Wait what is it exactly? Is it basically French for duck meat? I've tried pecking duck and those were deelish.
it's basically fatty goose liver. sometimes it's duck liver. duck on the other hand is awesome. goose meat isn't all that though.
Foie gras is one of my favorite things to eat when prepared well. Especially on a Rib eye. Most of the geese used to make foie gras in the US are treated like royalty compared to the average chicken or cow in this country. Every time I've had it in a group and there has been anyone that claimed to not like foie gras ended up liking it or loving it after being prodded to try it again. It's kinda like sushi. People who have never had or only had it once might think it's gross (or claim to). But, if you give it a chance, most people will realize how amazingly delicious it is.
I love Foie. For all the talk about the horrible nature of the traditional feeding technique used on the bird I heard that all those ducks flock around that feeding tube because they love it. The foie I had in Spain was butter like in texture and sweet. On a crisp with so me steak tartare it was amazing.
LOL! They don't float around a feeding tube. They're confined and forced fed with a tube down their throat. Spoiler
I know it's a "forced" feeding (Gavage). They grab the bird and stuff the tube down their throat but the ducks don't fight it (what I've heard). Like someone else posted, they are treated a lot better than your normal chicken though. I've also heard of a ranch in Spain that practices a natural feeding technique. They basicly let the birds stuff themselves. Edit: here's the guy: "La Patería de Sousa" Another edit: and again I'm not defending the technique but if you turn your nose up at me about Foie then I want to be around you (not necessarily you Pun) when you eat a piece of chicken or an egg.
