Both aren't that good defensively. Lin gives his opponent too much space because he doesn't react fast enough to quicker guards. He tends to cheat and help defend too much which allows him to steal some rebounds from his teammates. Toney guards tightly and is aggressive which makes his opponent work harder but he isn't fast enough to keep quicker guards in front of him. I guess with Toney at least it looks like he's being aggressive which is probably what the coaches see. Lin just isn't an aggressive player offensively or defensively Post-Linsanity.
I am cracking up at your posts. Sad tho that you are right. Don't forget that in trying to play his best 3 point shooting lineup, he took out today's best 3 point shooter for the Rockets, Lin.
Your right that Douglas does appear to be the better defender because of the was he hustles around and he may be better in some situations. Even though it appears that way he isn't as good of a defender as Lin and when people say that he is a better defender I just think that they aren't really paying to close of attention to the game. I watched a few games of Linsanity last year and a lot of highlights but I didn't pay close attention to the games like I do Rocket games. I thought Lin would come in here and be a below average defender but that hasn't been the case at all. Just last week Morey said that Lin is still having problems from his injury and he can't decelerate good yet. I'm impressed by his defense now and as he heals he will get better. It appears like his shooting is getting better little by little, I think if the coaches want to put the team in a situation to succeed that will have to learn how to use him better. For the most part this offense isn't very effective when you take him off of the floor.
correct me if i m wrong, mayo scored 2 pts while lin played for the entire 3rd quarter. not saying lin was a terrific defender at all. mayo is just not that consistent. based on lin's performance at the 3rd Q, i was totally surprised he did not get any PT for the 4th Q... time to replace coach mchale, he is clueless...
looking at 12 points, and 4 reounds in 29 minutes played on the boxscore for patrick patterson, you might as well give Marcus Morris another shot at the starting PF gig with sh!tty numbers like that.
You might as well make Morris the starting power forward. I mean Morris almost averages just about the same amount of rebounds coming off the bench as Patrick Patterson starting, with alot less minutes. So I can only assume Morris could possibly average even more rebounds starting in Patterson's place regardless of Morris's shooting slumps.
Exactly. But don't you see Mchale's perspective? It's still somehow Lin's fault for not guarding his man and somehow at the same time help Harden guard Mayo. That is why he was benched the most of the 1st quarter and the entire 2nd and 4th quarter! Our coaching staff are geniuses!!! They just felt their defense was a problem in the 1st quarter and took Lin out. They must have felt TD could guard the Mayo for Harden and it worked! Mayo only scored 40 points on us. That's right only 40!!
Look to be completely honest. Even though Toney Douglas DOES bring the ball up faster and penetrated a little bit better than Lin. Lin IS better now and is TWO YEARS YOUNGER.
But Lin wasn't defending Mayo though (and neither was Douglas for quite a stretch). I could be wrong but I thought it was because Douglas creates spacing for Harden by drawing defender out. I think Lin is the smarter defender of the two, often luring the opponent to his bigs (Asik), whereas Douglas just pesters his man aggressively but blindly. But yes, Lin's tendency to help does leave too much space between him & his man at times. And for quicker guards, that little space is all they need.
The thing that blew me away was not putting Asik back in the game. He has has had a couple bad games here and there but he has for the most part been our most consistent player. He's a rebounding monster and the leader of our defense. Without him, our defensive concept is lost. So, your rant and most of the discussion here has been centered around Lin (per usual) but in this game and most games the difference between playing Patterson at center vs. Asik is far greater than the difference between playing Douglas vs. Lin. And, unfortunately, Lin hasn't been the well defined starter we want him to be. He's not a guy like Parsons are Harden, that we insert in the 4th no matter what is going on. With the way he's playing, Lin's a starter simply because someone must start the game. The coaches just go with whomever is playing best that game between him and Douglas
Honestly, I didn't see it last season aside from a few issues with overplaying the starters but this season thanks to the Comcast deal and more half the games having to be watched with ready access to the box score, I see it.
